Reserve play key as Sun Devils outlast Commodores

Mar 22, 2014 - 7:23 PM Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Katie Hempen scored 16 points and Sophie Brunner added 14, each doing so off the bench, as the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores 69-61 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Savage Arena.

Elisha Davis tallied 11 points and five assists for the ninth-seeded Sun Devils (23-9) and Promise Amukamara chipped in 10 points. Arizona State will test top-seed Notre Dame next.

Marqu'es Webb finished with a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds for the eighth-seeded Commodores (18-13). Christina Foggie tacked on 16 points.

Arizona State entered intermission leading 30-24. The Sun Devils connected on 56.5 percent from the field in the first half and outscored Vanderbilt 12-0 from 3-point range.

In the second half the Sun Devils improved to 66.7 percent shooting, while the Commodores shot at a 50 percent clip.

Vanderbilt, which connected on 47.8 percent from the field overall, had a 14-5 scoring edge at the free-throw line. Arizona State had a 33-20 advantage on the boards.
