Syracuse tops Chattanooga for first NCAA tourney win
Mar 22, 2014 - 9:21 PM Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Shakeya Leary netted 15 points as the sixth-seeded Syracuse Orange secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament win with a 59-53 victory over the 11th-seed Chattanooga Mocs in first round action at Memorial Coliseum.Brianna Butler (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Brittney Sykes (13 points, 12 rebounds) each posted double-doubles for Syracuse (23-9), which will take on third-seed Kentucky next.
Taylor Hall had 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Chattanooga (29-4).
Following a first half in which neither team had much success on offense, Syracuse led 28-24. The Orange made up for a 30.3 percent shooting effort by sinking 7-of-9 at the free-throw line in the period. The Mocs shot a superior 35.5 percent from the field, but missed all three attempts from the charity stripe.
Both teams connected on 33.3 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Syracuse had a 17-4 scoring edge from the free-throw line in the period, as it held on.
Chattanooga only made 4-of-14 free-throw attempts. The Orange got 24 total points at the foul line.
