Cougars topple Cornhuskers
Mar 25, 2014 - 4:41 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Morgan Bailey scored 18 points and Jennifer Hamson had a double-double for the 12th-seeded BYU Cougars, who knocked off the fourth-seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers 80-76 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Pauley Pavilion.Hamson finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for BYU (28-6), which will face the winner of Tuesday's second round battle between top-seed Connecticut and ninth-seed Saint Joseph's in the Sweet 16. Lexi Eaton had 15 points for the Cougars and Xojian Harry tallied 11.
Tear'a Laudermill poured in 22 points and Jordan Hooper added 20 points for Nebraska (26-7). Emily Cady (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Hailie Sample (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles and Rachel Theriot nearly had one herself, producing 11 points and nine assists,
BYU came out firing, as it took a 41-30 lead into halftime after shooting 53.6 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-13 showing from 3-point range, in the first half. Nebraska failed to keep up, shooting 33.3 percent overall in the frame.
The Cougars kept up the torrid pace after the break, sinking 48.1 percent from the floor, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, as they held off the Cornhuskers.
BYU enjoyed a 17-3 advantage in second chance points. Four of the five starters for Nebraska played in all 40 minutes, as the Cornhuskers were outscored 17-0 in bench points.
