Cardinals crush Hawkeyes in second round

Mar 26, 2014 - 4:27 AM Iowa City, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Shoni Schimmel netted 26 points with five rebounds, seven assists and five steals as the third-seeded Louisville Cardinals toppled the sixth-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes, 83-53, in a second-round NCAA Tournament contest at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Antonita Slaughter scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Louisville (32-4), which moves on to the Sweet 16 where the Cardinals will face seventh-seeded LSU. Asia Taylor, Tia Gibbs and Jude Schimmel all registered 10 points in the win.

Ally Disterhoft tallied 15 points and eight rebounds to pace Iowa (27-9), while Samantha Logic scored 12 with five boards and five steals. Logic also turned the ball over a team-high nine times in the defeat. Theairra Taylor chipped in 10 points for the Hawkeyes.

Louisville didn't need much time to heat up shooting the ball, as the Cardinals connected on 64 percent of their field goal tries in the first half to take a 40-23 lead at the intermission. Iowa struggled to hit its shots from the floor in the frame, netting 31 percent of its attempts, including a dismal 0-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Cardinals cooled down to 41.7 percent shooting in the second half, but hit 6-of-11 from 3-point distance and 17-of-20 from the free-throw line. The Hawkeyes slightly improved their shooting accuracy in the period to 35.7 percent, this time making just 1-of-8 from distance.

Louisville had the edge in points off turnovers, 20-11, and outscored Iowa from beyond the arc, 27-3. The Hawkeyes won the battle in points in the paint, 32-24.
