Louisville rolls past LSU into the Elite Eight
Mar 30, 2014 - 10:14 PM Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Shoni Schimmel scored 19 points and dished out six assists in leading the Louisville Cardinals to a 73-47 rout of the LSU Tigers in the Sweet 16 at the KFC Yum! Center.Tia Gibbs nailed 5-of-9 from 3-point range to account for all 15 of her points for the third-seeded Cardinals (33-4), who advance to take on fourth-seed Maryland in the regional final. Antonita Slaughter contributed 10 points and Asia Taylor brought down 10 rebounds.
Danielle Ballard poured in 24 points to go with 10 rebounds for the seventh- seeded Lady Tigers (21-13). Theresa Plaisance collected 12 rebounds and Shanece McKinney grabbed 10 before fouling out.
In the first half Louisville connected on a modest 42.9 percent from the floor, but it hit 7-of-18 shots from 3-point range and limited LSU to just 30 percent shooting. The Cardinals led 41-23 at intermission.
Louisville continued to extend its lead in the second half, when the Lady Tigers only managed to connected on 18.9 percent from the floor.
LSU lost despite a 48-46 advantage on the boards. Louisville had 12 3-pointers while the Lady Tigers had just one. The Cardinals also had 21 assists compared to two from LSU.
