Iowa holds off American

Mar 20, 2015 - 10:30 PM Iowa City, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ally Disterhoft scored 18 points, Whitney Jennings had 16 and Iowa topped American 75-67 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

Samantha Logic flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and Melissa Dixon had 15 points for the third- seeded Hawkeyes (25-7), who will play 11th-seeded Miami on Sunday.

It wasn't easy for Iowa, playing on its home floor. American, which earned its first NCAA Tournament bid after capturing the Patriot League title, led by four late in the first half.

The Eagles (24-9) fell behind by 13 in the second half but rallied to pull within 69-64 on an Arron Zimmerman 3-pointer with 2:47 left.

Shaquilla Curtis missed from beyond the arc after a Dixon turnover 30 seconds later, and Ari Booth had a chance to make it a two-point game with a 1:10 left, but her 3-point try clanked off the back rim.

Two free throws by Jennings made it 71-64 with 39 seconds remaining.

Jen Dumiak led American with 23 points and nine assists. Zimmerman and Booth posted 17 points apiece.
