California overtakes Wichita State in opening round
Mar 21, 2015 - 1:57 AM Berkeley, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Reshanda Gray scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, heading a group of five double-digit scorers that led the fourth-seeded California Golden Bears past the 13th-seeded Wichita State Shockers, 78-66, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Haas Pavilion.Mercedes Jefflo chipped in with 14 points for the Golden Bears (24-9), while Brittany Boyd added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Mikayla Cowling and Gabby Green each contributed 11 points, but Green pulled down eight rebounds in the win.
California moves on to the second round of the tournament, and will square off against the fifth-seeded Texas Longhorns on Sunday.
Alex Harden netted 22 points with nine rebounds and four steals to lead Wichita State (29-5). Michaela Dapprich collected 16 points and six boards, and Alie Decker poured in 14 points in the loss.
California held a 42-32 advantage over Wichita State in points in the paint, and owned a 38-27 edge on the glass in the win.
