Syracuse holds on to beat Huskers

Mar 21, 2015 - 3:03 AM Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexis Peterson scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists to lead her eighth-seeded Syracuse Orange past the ninth-seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers, 72-69, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Colonial Life Arena.

Cornelia Fondren chipped in with 18 points and nine rebounds to help Syracuse (22-9), while Brianna Butler contributed 17 points in the win.

The Orange advance to the second round of the tournament, and will meet top- seeded South Carolina on Sunday.

Emily Cady narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds to pace Nebraska (21-11), while Natalie Romeo chimed in with 15 points but also had five turnovers. Hailie Sample added 14 points and seven boards for the Huskers in the loss.

Nebraska gave away 19 turnovers in the contest, and also was outscored by the Orange, 14-4, in points off those turnovers. Neither side held a lead greater than six points all game.
