Wiese and Weisner lead No. 7 Oregon State in rout of Hofstra

Nov 27, 2015 - 8:11 PM SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Oregon State got off to a fast start and never looked back against Hofstra.

Sydney Wiese scored 19 points and Jamie Weisner added 15 to help the seventh-ranked Beavers beat the Pride 73-50 on Friday in the San Juan Shootout.

Oregon State (4-0) gave up the first two points before scoring 12 straight to take control early on.

''I think jumping out to an early lead was crucial for us,'' Weisner said. ''We got off to a great start offensively, and we were able to establish ourselves early on.''

Hofstra (4-1) would close the gap to six after one quarter, but then Oregon State opened up a 20-point lead in the second period. Samantha Siegner shot at the buzzer made it 41-21 at the break and the Beavers never let Hofstra get much closer in the second half.

''I thought we defended really well,'' said Oregon State coach Scott Rueck. ''Hofstra is the most athletic team we've seen, and they're not an easy team to stay in front of. I think we shot the ball well, and overall this is a good win over a very nice Hofstra team.''

Kelly Loftus scored 14 points to lead Hofstra, which was off to the school's best start since 1985-86 when the team won its first five games.

''We saw why they are ranked so high. They gave us a lot of problems on the glass and took advantage of second-chance opportunities,'' Hofstra coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey said. ''We're holding our heads high because we want to compete at a high level. We'll take the lessons from this game and work on getting better.''

Hofstra lost guard Anjie White to a left arm injury after she scored the game's first basket. She lost her balance and fell on the arm. White was down for a few minutes before leaving the court.

''It was a huge blow but I was proud of our second half fight,'' Kilburn-Steveskey said. ''We showed a lot of fight and character under difficult circumstances.''

This was the first-ever meeting between the teams.
