No. 6 Maryland women beat Maryland Eastern Shore 106-30

Dec 20, 2015 - 9:37 PM PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) Things have come easy so far for No. 6 Maryland.

The Terrapins breezed through another blowout Sunday, getting 23 points apiece from Brene Moseley and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough in a 106-30 romp over Maryland Eastern Shore. Kiara Leslie scored 22 for Maryland (11-0), which set a school record for victory margin.

Things get far more difficult from here for the Terrapins. After a showdown with No. 1 Connecticut on Dec. 28, Maryland opens Big Ten play at Illinois.

''We needed our nonconference to grow as a team, to get our feet wet,'' coach Brenda Frese said. ''We're ready now. We understand we're going into UConn and conference play and we know what to expect.''

The Terps built a 40-point halftime lead and broke the century mark for the third time this season. After outscoring UMES 33-8 in the second quarter, and Maryland closed the game with a 25-1 fourth quarter.

''I thought Maryland was incredible,'' UMES coach Fred Batchelor said. ''It was a walk in the park for them. I think we were a little in awe of them and a little fearful.''

Moengaroa Subritzky led UMES (3-9) with 12 points.

Maryland shot a season best 68 percent, making 42 of 62 field-goal attempts. UMES shot 16 percent, making just 11 of 67 shots.

''I think we shared the ball well, did well technically and executed well,'' Leslie said. ''Our non-conference games have prepared us for the big games coming up.''

Walker-Kimbrough made 10 of 13 shots, Moseley made 9 of 10 and Leslie was 8 for 11.

Maryland made 21 of 31 shots in building a 53-13 halftime lead.

Walker-Kimbrough scored 17 first-half points and Moseley added 13. The Hawks made only five of 36 attempts in the first half. Maryland scored the first 11 points and built an 18-2 lead. Walker-Kimbrough scored 10 of the Terps' first 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Maryland led 20-5 after one quarter. A 20-5 run to open the second quarter made it 40-10.

Maryland: Sophomore guard Kristen Confroy started her first game of the season. Kiah Gillespie, who had started nine of the previous 10 games, did not start, but came off the bench to score nine points and grab six rebounds. ''Just finding the right combination in terms of what we're doing,'' Frese said.

UMES: The loss was the fourth in a row for the Hawks. It was the first time the women's program had hosted a nationally ranked team since 2005 against Temple.

UP NEXT Maryland: The Terps face unbeaten UConn on Dec. 28.

UMES: The Hawks host Old Dominion on Tuesday.
