Weisner leads No. 7 Oregon State women past No. 12 UCLA
Feb 22, 2016 - 6:21 AM CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) One of Oregon State's strengths is its depth. Against No. 12 UCLA, however, the ninth-ranked Beavers got nearly all of its scoring from its three stars.Jamie Weisner scored 25 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, Sydney Wiese had 21 points and Ruth Hamblin added 16 to help Oregon State beat UCLA 64-54 on Sunday night to tie a school record with its 14th straight win.
''Usually we're known for spreading it around and having a lot of contributions, especially off the bench,'' said Hamblin, who also had 15 rebounds and six blocks.
Deven Hunter was the only other Beavers player to score, making a jumper with 7:35 left in the third quarter.
''This is not a three-person team and everybody can play,'' Weisner said.
Before the game, the Beavers (24-3, 15-1 Pac-12) honored five players on senior night, including Weisner and Hamblin, who have already helped Oregon State to three 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament appearances and the school's first conference championship.
Nirra Fields had 20 points, Jordin Canada added 15 and Monique Billings had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks for the Bruins (19-7, 11-4), who snapped a four-game winning streak.
The Beavers led 50-39 entering the fourth, and UCLA couldn't get closer than eight the rest of the game.
Oregon State held the Bruins to 30 percent shooting. However, the Beavers shot 37 percent themselves and committed 18 turnovers.
UCLA coach Cori Close was proud of her team's effort, but said the Bruins needed better execution on offense.
''We needed to get some easier shots for each other,'' she said
UCLA beat Oregon State 71-51 on Jan. 4, and that remains the Beavers' only conference loss. Wiese missed that game due to a hand injury.
UCLA held Oregon State scoreless for nearly five minutes during had an 8-0 run in the first quarter in this game. Lajahna Drummer's lay-in with 2:20 left put UCLA up 12-5.
Oregon State went on an 11-2 run shortly before halftime, fueled by 3-pointers by Weisner, who had two, and Wiese.
The Beavers led 34-29 at the break.
With UCLA's top post player, Kacy Swain, out with an injury, Oregon State went down low to Hamblin after the half. During a 7-0 run, Hamblin scored two lay-ins and the Beavers took a 47-33 lead with 3:11 left in the third quarter.
''The guards set really good screens and got me open, so we got some easy looks there and maintained our momentum,'' Hamblin said.
TIP-INS
UCLA: Canada has a steal in 21 straight games, while Fields has scored in double figures in 22 straight games. ... Swain landed awkwardly after fouling Weisner on a pump fake near the end of the first half and injured her knee. She did not return.
Oregon State: During the Beavers' win streak, no opponent has shot better than 35.3 percent. ... The 1982-83 squad, which went to the Sweet 16, also won 14 games in a row.
OFFENSIVE BOARDS
Weisner had nine offensive rebounds and that gave Oregon State key extra possessions.
''I wasn't even supposed to be offensive rebounding,'' Weisner said. ''I just went after the balls I thought I could get. And they happened to land in my hands, luckily.''
REVENGE
Weisner said the win against UCLA was ''awesome.''
''They're obviously a great team. We had a target on our back the first time we went in there, and we wanted to get them today. We all came out with that mentality that it was going to be tough, but we're playing in front of our home crowd, and we have momentum,'' she added.
