Marist rolls to MAAC title
Mar 9, 2008 - 5:25 PM ALBANY, New York (Ticker) -- No. 20 Marist coasted to its third straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship Sunday, routing Iona, 83-63, in the title game.Rachele Fitz scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half for the Red Foxes, who extended a school record with their 31st win of the season.
Playing in its fifth straight MAAC final, Marist (31-2) added to another school mark with its 21st consecutive victory. During the regular season, the Red Foxes became the first MAAC team to go 18-0 in conference play.
Marist, which has won four of the last five MAAC titles, wore down Iona (19-13) with balanced scoring as five players reached double figures, including four starters. Erica Allenspach contributed 18 points.
Tiara Headen scored 15 points to pace the Gaels, who lost all three meetings with Marist this season.
