Pittsburgh defeats Notre Dame in Big East
Mar 9, 2008 - 9:08 PM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Mercedes Walker recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds, leading Pittsburgh to a 64-53 victory over No. 15 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference tournament on Sunday.The Panthers (22-9), who avenged a regular-season loss to Notre Dame, will face top seed Connecticut in Monday's semifinals.
In a sloppy game, Pittsburgh shot just 34 percent (22-of-64) from the field and turned the ball over 19 times. However, the Panthers held the Fighting Irish to 31 percent (19-of-62) and forced 20 turnovers.
Notre Dame tied the contest, 51-51, on Erica Williamson's layup with 2:31 remaining before Pittsburgh put away the contest with an 8-0 spurt.
Charel Allen scored 17 points for Notre Dame (23-8), which received a bye in the first round.
