Arkansas State beats Western Kentucky 24-20

Dec 4, 2009 - 4:31 AM BOWLING GREEN, Ky.(AP) -- Alex Carrington returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown with 3:49 left and Arkansas State overcame a 17-point deficit to beat winless Western Kentucky 24-20 on Thursday night.

The loss extended Western Kentucky's losing streak to an Football Bowl Subdivision-high 20 games. The Hilltoppers (0-12, 0-8) haven't won since Sept. 20, 2008, a 50-9 victory over Murray State.

Western Kentucky took a 20-3 lead on Casey Tinius' 34-yard field goal with 3:22 left in the third quarter. But the Red Wolves (4-8, 3-5 Sun Belt Conference) answered with two scores on a 12-yard run by Ryan Aplin and on his 4-yard pass to J.T. Jordan.

Arkansas State pulled ahead for good when Stanley Wakwe sacked Western Kentucky quarterback Kawaun Jakes, causing him to fumble as Carrington returned it for the go-ahead score.

Jakes went 12-for-19 for 121 yards for the Hilltoppers.
