Yale scores 14 in 3rd for 21-7 win over Cornell

Sep 25, 2010 - 8:42 PM ITHACA, N.Y.(AP) -- Alex Thomas' 1-yard touchdown run sparked 14 third-quarter points for Yale in a 21-7 win over Cornell on Saturday.

With the game tied in the third quarter, Adam Money intercepted a pass from Cornell's Jeff Mathews, returning it 20 yards to the Yale 45. The Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0 Ivy League) then went 55 yards in nine plays as Thomas' run put them ahead 14-7.

Yale then got another 1-yard score from Patrick Witt with 1:28 left in the third.

Witt finished with 232 yards and a touchdown on 18-for-32 passing. He put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a 69-yard pass to Gio Christodoulou in the first quarter.

Mathews, who was 23-for-35 passing with 248 yards and a touchdown, was the first Big Red (0-1, 0-1) freshman ever to start at quarterback.

Mathews' first career touchdown was an 8-yard pass to Nick Booker-Tandy late in the first quarter.
