South Carolina State beats Hampton 10-7

Oct 23, 2010 - 10:07 PM ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Blake Erickson kicked a career-long 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to clinch a 10-7 victory for South Carolina State over Hampton on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 Mid-Eastern Atheltic Conference) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Chris Massey.

The Pirates (5-2, 4-1) tied the score at 7-7 in the third after a 4-yard touchdown run from David Legree.

After Legree's game-tying score, both teams combined for only three first downs until the 10:50 mark of the fourth quarter when South Carolina State took over possession at its own 33-yard line.

The Bulldogs marched 36 yards on 8 plays before their drive stalled at the Hampton 31-yard line. That's when Erickson kicked his game-deciding field goal with 7:23 remaining to give South Carolina State the victory.
