South Alabama defeats UC Davis 24-21

Oct 24, 2010 - 2:54 AM DAVIS, Calif. (AP) -- Courtney Smith caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Bennett with 5:29 remaining, and South Alabama survived a potential game-tying field goal on the final play for a 24-21 victory against UC Davis on Saturday.

UC Davis kicker Sean Kelley was wide right from 34 yards as time expired.

Smith had six receptions for 105 yards and two TDs for the Jaguars (7-0), who have not lost in 14 games since the program began competition last year. Beating the Aggies (3-4) was one of the more significant wins for South Alabama, which has played FCS, Division II and NAIA schools as it prepares to join the FBS Sun Belt Conference in 2013.

Quarterback Randy Wright was 23 of 42 for 238 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for UC Davis. Sean Creadick caught 12 passes for 147 yards and a score.

The Jaguars utilized two QBs, with Brennan Sim going 13 of 18 for 116 yards and a TD, and Bennett 7 of 13 for 105 yards.
