Jones, No. 16 Oklahoma rout Baylor
Nov 21, 2010 - 7:21 AMVideo
Jones shook off an early interception and was 26-of-39 through the air, while DeMarco Murray added 182 yards from scrimmage and two TDs for the Sooners (9-2, 5-2 Big 12), who were coming off a 45-7 win over Texas Tech.
Ryan Broyles had 12 receptions for 113 yards with a score in the victory.
Oklahoma, as well as Texas A&M, sits at 5-2 in the Big 12 South, one game behind Oklahoma State, which hosts the Sooners in the regular season finale next week.
Robert Griffin III had one of his two interceptions returned for a touchdown and finished with just 124 yards and a score for Baylor (7-5, 4-4), which ended a once promising regular season with three straight losses.
"Now we've got a one-game season coming up. It's a bowl game. That's the way we're going to look at it," Baylor head coach Art Briles said. "We're not just satisfied with being in a bowl game, we're going to go fight hard to win the bowl game."
Landry was picked off on the game's opening series, but Baylor went three-and- out before Murray took a screen pass 76 yards for a score at the 9:50 mark.
The Bears surprisingly went for it on 4th-and-1 at their own 33 on the ensuing drive, and Sooners linebacker Austin Box stuffed Jay Finley at the line of scrimmage. Murray's 13-yard stretch run to the left side came four plays after the turnover on downs, and Oklahoma suddenly held a 14-0 lead.
Things got worse for Baylor when Krys Buerck muffed a punt at his own eight- yard line. Smelling blood, Roy Finch ran it in on the next play with 1:22 remaining in the opening quarter.
Finley's 50-yard run on the first play of the next drive set up a Griffin-to- Brad Taylor scoring strike of 12 yards on the second play of the second stanza.
Baylor's momentum quickly subsided when Broyles hauled in a five-yard TD pass from Jones less than five minutes later to cap an 11-play, 72-yard drive.
Oklahoma kicker Jimmy Stevens added field goals of 28 and 33 yards in the final six minutes of the half, and in the opening minute of the second half, Ronnell Lewis picked off a Griffin pass and took it 12 yards the other way for a TD and a commanding 41-7 cushion.
Aaron Jones made a 44-yard field goal for Baylor midway through the third quarter, but four plays from scrimmage later, Kenny Stills hauled in a 49-yard TD pass.
Ahmad Dixon was stripped of the ball on the ensuing kickoff, and the loose ball was batted through the back of the end zone for a safety.
Stevens added a 25-yard field goal late in the third.
"You are sitting there with a 50-10 lead in the fourth quarter, you have done a lot right," Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said. "[Baylor] came in first or second in the league in scoring and yards and this whole thing, and you are sitting there in that position going into the fourth quarter. That is a good day in all parts of the game."
Baylor's Jarred Salubi rushed touchdowns of four and 38 yards to make the score somewhat respectable.
