Boise State rebounds with win over Utah State

Dec 5, 2010 - 4:36 AM Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore passed for 238 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for another as No. 9 Boise State dispatched Utah State, 50-14, at Bronco Stadium.

Moore, who only played the first three quarters, completed 24-of-34 passes and connected with Kyle Efaw twice and Austin Pettis once for the Broncos (11-1, 7-1 WAC), who recovered from last week's crushing loss at Nevada and clinched a share of the conference crown. Hawaii and the Wolf Pack will also finish with 7-1 records.

Mike Coughlin ended the game under center with 14 passing yards and a one-yard TD run.

Efaw posted 76 yards on five receptions, while Pettis posted 52 yards on four catches. Jeremy Avery added 69 yards and a rushing score on 10 carries.

Diondre Borel struggled mightily to post 39 yards and two interceptions on just 4-of-16 passing for the Aggies (4-8, 2-6), who dropped two in a row and four of six to end their season.

Kerrwyn Williams recorded a game-high 142 yards and a TD on 19 carries and Borel added a score on the ground in defeat.

The Broncos started off sharply with a pair of touchdowns. First, it was Derrel Acrey picking off Borel on the game's first play from scrimmage and going 31 yards for a score.

"That was awesome," Acrey said. "That is how you start the game off. From there it was like 'Let's go.' There is no stopping us. It set the tone really high for us and got the team going."

Then, on Boise State's second possession, Moore connected with Efaw on a 12- yard score and a Pettis conversion run made it 15-0.

"When you're playing Boise -- or any very, very good football team -- it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you can't go down 15-0, especially the way we did," Utah State Head Coach Gary Andersen said.

Williams' 40-yard run to paydirt brought Utah State within eight before the quarter was over.

Moore once more hit Efaw on a two-yard pass and it was 22-7 less than two minutes into the second, then Pettis leapt in the end zone to pull down a four-yard Moore pass to make it 29-7 with 1:13 before halftime.

Avery posted a 13-yard TD run with under six minutes to play in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 36-7 edge. Moore added a one-yard plunge inside the final minute of the period.

Borel's one-yard scoring run early in the fourth put the Aggies in double digits, but Coughlin plunged in from the one on BSU's next series to crack the 50-point plateau.
