Alabama crushes Georgia State
Nov 19, 2010 - 5:11 AM Tuscaloosa, AL (Sports Network) - Greg McElroy threw two touchdown passes to Julio Jones, as the 10th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide annihilated the Georgia State Panthers, 63-7.McElroy completed 12-of-13 passes for 159 yards for the Crimson Tide (9-2), who have won 20 consecutive games at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Jones caught seven passes for 86 yards.
Mark Ingram carried the ball 12 times for 86 yards and a touchdown, while Eddie Lacy rushed for 81 yards and a score on 13 carries for Alabama, which has won two in a row since a loss to LSU on November 6.
"Well, first of all, I was really pleased with the way our guys came out and played in this game today," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "We wanted to develop habits in this game that would help us in the future, and I was very pleased with the way we did that tonight. It was a short week so we had a different kind of preparation, but the intensity, the toughness and the effort in the way we played the game was the way we wanted to play."
Drew Little connected on 4-of-11 passes for 69 yards and four interceptions for the Panthers (6-5), who concluded their inaugural season of football.
Alabama made sure they put the game away early. The Crimson Tide opened the game with an eight-play, 67-yard drive. Jones capped the march with an eight- yard TD catch.
Georgia State's first play on offense resulted in a 55-yard pass from Little to Emmanuel Ogbuehi. Later in the drive, Little was picked off by Mark Barron.
It took Alabama 11 plays to find the end zone this time around. Faced with a 4th-and-goal from the one, Ingram rumbled into the end zone to make it 14-0 with 3:55 to go in the first quarter.
Cade Foster missed a 54-yard field goal on the next Crimson Tide possession. Alabama made up for Foster's miss when C.J. Mosley picked off Little early in the second period and raced 41 yards the other way for a touchdown.
After the Panthers went three-and-out, Jones ended a four-play, 72-yard march with a 10-yard TD catch for a 28-0 advantage with about 10 minutes remaining.
Just moments later, Brandon Gibson returned a blocked punt 22 yards for a touchdown. Lacy added to Alabama's lead with a three-yard rushing TD.
Albert Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to make it a 42-7 game at the half.
Little was intercepted again early in the third quarter, leading to Chris Underwood's seven-yard TD catch.
Demetrius Goode's one-yard rushing touchdown with over six minutes remaining made it a 56-7 game.
Jalston Fowler broke a 36-yard run for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth to account for the final score.
"Alabama has a great football team, I think the best Alabama team I've ever seen. Maybe the best Nick Saban team I've ever seen," Georgia State head coach Bill Curry said.
