Virginia Tech routs Appalachian State

Sep 3, 2011 - 11:25 PM Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - David Wilson racked up 162 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as 13th-ranked Virginia Tech clobbered Appalachian State, 66-13, at Lane Stadium.

Logan Thomas was just 9-of-19 for 149 yards, but threw for two scores for the Hokies (1-0), who managed to erase the memory of a shocking home loss to James Madison almost a year ago with the convincing defeat of another FCS program.

"This was a really good win," Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said. "Appalachian State concerned me coming in here. I thought they were well prepared, and we played well for the most part. There were a lot of things to feel good about, but a lot of things to learn from and that's going to be our challenge now."

Marcus Davis posted 140 yards and two TDs on three receptions and Kyle Fuller recovered a blocked punt for another touchdown for Virginia Tech, which saw Mark Leal throw for 113 yards and two more late scores on 6-of-9 passing.

The victory came shortly after Beamer, who saw a successful beginning to his 25th year at the helm, signed a contract extension that aims to keep him in charge in Blacksburg through the 2016 season.

DeAndre Presley threw for 89 yards on 7-of-18 passes and was picked off twice, while backup Jamal Jackson threw for a touchdown and rushed for another for the Mountaineers (0-1). Brian Quick contributed 110 yards and a touchdown on three catches in the setback.

Things went downhill quickly for Appalachian State, and Virginia Tech capitalized.

Presley fumbled on the second play from scrimmage, and Antone Exum recovered for the Hokies at the ASU 20. On the next play, Wilson scampered into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Cody Journell capped the next Virginia Tech drive with a 28-yard field goal, and Josh Oglesby made it 17-0 before the end of the quarter on a four-yard TD rush.

Wilson's 19-yard run to paydirt pushed the Hokies advantage to 24-0 in the second quarter, and he struck again before the end of the half on a three-yard rush.

Thomas connected with Randall Dunn on a seven-yard scoring pass and it was 38-0 for Virginia Tech at the break.

The rout continued in the second half, as Thomas hit Jarrett Boykin for a four-yard score, and a blocked punt by Tony Gregory was recovered in the end zone by Fuller for a 52-0 game.

ASU's answer finally came late in the third when Jackson connected with Quick for a 46-yard touchdown, but the point after failed.

Leal subbed for Thomas and found Davis for a 22-yard strike and it was 59-6 heading to the fourth.

Jackson's 15-yard touchdown run was countered by a 63-yard TD from Leal to Davis with 8:11 remaining to cap the rout.

Not to take anything away from them, but I wouldn't classify them as an elite team," Presley said. "We stopped ourselves so many times. "We made them look better than what they were."

Virginia Tech has won all four meetings, including a 34-0 victory in the last matchup in 1982...The Hokies racked up 518 yards of total offense to 293 for the Mountaineers...ASU fell to 7-39-1 all-time against FBS opponents.
