No. 13 Oregon ousts Nevada
Sep 11, 2011 - 1:21 AM Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Darron Thomas tied a school record with six touchdown passes as 13th-ranked Oregon had little trouble in a 69-20 win over Nevada.Thomas went 13-for-19 with 295 yards for the Ducks (1-1), who bounced back from last week's loss to LSU. De'Anthony Thomas caught two touchdowns in the win.
"We have to come out with a fire and play hard regardless of who we are playing," said Darron Thomas. "Whether it is LSU or Nevada we need to always come out 100 percent and play well."
Tyler Lantrip threw for 219 yards on 21-for-35 passing with a score and two interceptions for the Wolf Pack (0-1), who played their first game of the season after a 2010 campaign that saw the team go 13-1 and finish 11th in the national polls.
"We're embarrassed, I'm embarrassed," said Nevada head coach Chris Ault. "To play that way on that stage. You've got to really look at what you are doing and we've got to crate other avenues to go down."
Oregon led this game from start to finish as the team took the opening possession 79 yards and on the 11th play LaMichael James punched the ball into the end zone from four yards out for a 6-0 lead as the Ducks went for two and failed.
Nevada had a 38-yard field goal attempt from Anthony Martinez blocked later in the first quarter and a De'Anthony Thomas 62-yard run led to a three-yard touchdown catch from Lavasier Tuinei for a 13-0 lead after one quarter.
Troy Hill picked off a Lantrip pass and on the first play of the second quarter and Darron Thomas and James hooked up on a 44-yard score.
Darron Thomas had touchdown passes of 25 yards to Rahsaan Vaughn and 20 yards to Colt Lyerla, the latter coming with under six minutes to play to make it a 34-0 game.
The Wolf Pack were finally able to put points on the board on their next touch when Lantrip hooked up with Mike Ball on a five-yard score to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive with under two minutes left in the half.
Darron Thomas, though, threw his fourth touchdown of the quarter with just seconds remaining when he found De'Anthony Thomas on a 24-yard score to make it a 41-7 game at the break.
Nevada started the second half with the ball and quickly had to punt with James returning it 58 yards for a score.
Nevada was able to answer on its next touch as a 13-play, 89-yard drive was capped with a one-yard touchdown run from Stefphon Jefferson. The extra point was blocked and it was a 48-13 game with 8 1/2 minutes left in the third.
However, Oregon got the points back just over a minute later when Darron Thomas connected with De'Anthony Thomas on a 69-yard score to make it a 55-13 game.
After Cody Fajardo reeled off a seven-yard scoring run for the Wolf Pack, Ayele Forde's 26-yard touchdown run with 2 1/2 minutes left and a 67-yard interception return by Boseko Lokombo in the closing seconds accounted for the final score.
