FSU makes quick work of Charleston Southern

Sep 11, 2011 - 3:47 AM Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - EJ Manuel completed 24-of-35 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns, as the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles annihilated the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 62-10.

Clint Trickett also got some time behind center for Florida State, and connected on 6-of-7 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.

Rashad Greene hauled in two passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns for the Seminoles (2-0), who beat UL-Monroe, 34-0, last week. Rodney Smith caught five passes for 77 yards and a score.

Florida State racked up 647 yards of total offense, while Charleston Southern managed just 84 yards.

"Went out and did what we were supposed to do -- didn't play perfect but we cleaned some things up," Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "Some young guys made some really nice plays and got some experience in what they did. We have to continue to get better. Defense played well. We didn't lose our concentration in the end of the ball game when the young guys were in."

Malcolm Dixon completed 7-of-15 passes for 50 yards for the Buccaneers (0-2), who suffered a 62-0 loss to UCF last week.

It took Florida State just three plays to score. Smith hauled in a 45-yard TD pass less than 1 1/2 minutes into the game to make it 7-0.

The Seminoles put together an eight-play, 74-yard scoring drive on their next possession. Bert Reed recorded a 35-yard run before catching an eight-yard touchdown pass.

Dustin Hopkins made a 24-yard field goal with less than 1 1/2 minutes to play in the first quarter for a 17-0 margin.

Florida State continued to pour it on in the second period. Reed caught a six- yard TD pass to make it 24-0. Later in the frame, Chris Thompson rumbled into the end zone from two yards out to make it a 31-point game.

Hopkins made a 26-yard field goal before the half for a 34-0 lead.

With Dixon struggling, Charleston Southern used a trick play to get on the board early in the third quarter. Running back Teddy Allen threw a three- yard TD pass to Carson Leshin to make it 34-7.

Lonnie Pryor and Greene caught touchdown passes for the Seminoles later in the frame to make it a 48-7 contest.

Greene caught another TD pass from Trickett early in the fourth for a 55-7 margin.

Andy Brown made a 22-yard field goal with 8:05 to play to make it 55-10.

Trickett's four-yard rushing TD with 2:23 left accounted for the final margin.

"We have been playing two FBS opponents a year for the last four years; I don't know if anybody in the FCS has done that," Charleston Southern head coach Jay Mills said. "We might be the only ones. We had Florida two years ago which was an incredible environment -- this was outstanding, first class as we had thought and hoped. It was especially special for our young men -- so many from the state of Florida -- it's a great opportunity for them as well."
