Boise State rolls over Toledo

Sep 17, 2011 - 6:29 AM Toledo, OH (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore went into the Glass Bowl and broke Toledo's spirit, throwing for a robust 455 yards and five touchdowns to carry No. 4 Boise State to a 40-15 victory.

Moore completed 32-of-42 passes and connected with Tyler Shoemaker on three scores. Doug Martin had 192 yards from scrimmage and a TD for the Broncos (2-0), who had nearly two weeks to prepare for the road tilt following their win over nationally-ranked Georgia.

Adonis Thomas ran for 65 yards and a touchdown for upset-minded Toledo (1-2), while Terrance Owens passed for 201 yards with an interception in defeat.

The Rockets, coming off a heart-breaking 27-22 loss at Ohio State, were facing the highest-ranked team ever to visit the Glass Bowl.

They shot out of the gate poised for an upset, forcing a three-and-out and scoring on their first touch on a well-designed screen play for Danny Noble, who went untouched on a 24-yard pitch and catch.

A successful fourth-down conversion halted Toledo's momentum and extended Boise State's next drive, which ended in Shoemaker's 26-yard score.

The Broncos gave the Rockets a taste of their own medicine a little later, as Martin took a short screen and turned it upfield en route to a 71-yard touchdown.

It stayed 13-6 -- thanks to errant extra points by both teams -- until the Broncos scored in the final minute of the second quarter. Moore nearly fumbled into the end zone on 2nd-and-goal from the two, as replay showed the Heisman Trophy hopeful to be down by contact before he coughed up the ball. On the next play from the one, Moore threw a jump ball in the right corner of the end zone that Shoemaker snagged.

Toledo managed a 35-yard Ryan Casano field goal before the halftime gun, and stopped the visitors on downs early in the third quarter.

Owens led the Rockets down the field and in position to score, but a tipped ball wound up in the hands of Chase Baker for an interception at the Boise State 11-yard line.

Moore then went to work, hitting 6-of-7 passes for 60 yards on the ensuing march, including a 12-yard touchdown to Kyle Efaw with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third.

Jermaine Robinson's interception and 60-yard return gave Toledo life later on, but Austin Dantin fumbled the ball away inside the Broncos' 10.

Shoemaker's third touchdown, a 17-yarder over the middle, essentially sealed the outcome, though Thomas and Drew Wright exchanged TD runs of one and eight yards, respectively, to cap the scoring.
