Moore leads No. 4 Boise State past Tulsa

Sep 25, 2011 - 5:20 AM Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Kellen Moore threw four touchdown passes to power the fourth-ranked Boise State Broncos to a 41-21 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Moore finished with 279 yards while completing 23-of-29 attempts.

Boise State (3-0) opened the home portion of its 2011 schedule by improving to 6-0 all-time against Tulsa.

Despite the comfortable win, Boise State head coach Chris Petersen knows the team can be better.

"There's no question we've got a long way to go. We better get there in a hurry, or we've got a short week that will catch us," Petersen said.

The Golden Hurricane (1-3) suffered their third loss to a Top-10 opponent this season. They began the season at Oklahoma and battled Oklahoma State last week.

"This is a good measuring stick. This is what top-10 football is about. Boise is a great example but so is Oklahoma State and so is Oklahoma. If that is where we want to take our program we have to be able to compete at that level," said Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship.

Boise State was turned away at the goal line on the game's opening drive. But the Broncos responded on their next possession when Moore found Tyler Shoemaker for a 26-yard touchdown. It was a 6-0 game after the extra point was blocked.

Following a Golden Hurricane punt, the duo hooked up again for Boise State, capping an 11-play march.

Jerrell Gavins picked off Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne twice, setting up a pair of Boise State touchdowns.

Four plays after the first interception, which came late in the first quarter, Doug Martin rumbled 33 yards to the end zone. The Broncos' lead grew to 27-0 when Moore hit Kyle Efaw for a one-yard scoring strike with 2:12 remaining before halftime.

Following the break, Mitch Burroughs hauled in a 10-yard TD pass to make it 34-0. A three-yard dash by Trey Watts put Tulsa on the board with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

On the first play of the final frame, Kinne found Willie Carter for an eight- yard touchdown.

The backup quarterbacks from both teams -- Boise State's Joe Southwick and Tulsa's Kalen Henderson -- traded touchdown passes later in the quarter to cap the scoring.
