Oklahoma State scores early and often against Kansas
Oct 9, 2011 - 12:30 AM Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - Brandon Weeden tossed four touchdowns in the first quarter as the sixth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys dominated the Kansas Jayhawks, 70-28, in a clash between Big 12 teams.Weeden completed 24-of-28 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns in less than two quarters before being replaced by Clint Chelf after the Cowboys (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) had taken a commanding lead.
Chelf went 14-for-21 through the air for 206 yards and two scores. Hubert Anyiam and Justin Blackmon each caught two TDs for Oklahoma State.
"We were ahead far enough to where there was no reason to leave him in the game and we could take everybody out," Oklahoma head coach Mike Gundy said about Weeden. "Chelf made some good throws."
Jordan Webb threw for 316 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions on 25-of-36 passing as the Jayhawks (2-3, 0-2) dropped their third straight game.
Tim Biere caught seven passes for 93 yards and a score, and JaCorey Shepherd caught three balls for 82 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort.
"The loss definitely hurts, but we need to keep our heads up and continue to fight," Webb said.
Kansas took the early lead with an 80-yard opening drive that resulted in a 10-yard strike from Webb to Biere. Biere's 35-yard grab highlighted the 10- play drive.
But Oklahoma State answered with a scoring drive of its own. The possession started at the Cowboys' 40 after the Jayhawks' kickoff went out of bounds. Weeden then connected on five straight passes before finding Josh Cooper in the end zone for a 12-yard score.
A Tony Pierson fumble on the first play of Kansas' next possession gave Oklahoma State the ball deep in Jayhawks territory, and Weeden found Blackmon for a 24-yard score three plays later to put the Cowboys ahead 14-7.
After forcing a Kansas punt, Anyiam pulled in a 56-yard catch before grabbing a two-yard TD to extend the Cowboys' lead.
Kansas was held to another three-and-out, and Oklahoma State capped a five- play scoring drive with a 38-yard rush by Jeremy Smith.
Brodrick Brown's interception gave Oklahoma State the ball at the Kansas 25 before Anyiam snagged a three-yard score from Weeden to make it a 35-7 game at the end of the first quarter.
Oklahoma State took its first possession of the second quarter 80 yards down the field, ending with Joseph Randle rumbling into the end zone from two yards out.
Webb lost a fumble and tossed an interception on Kansas' next two possessions, resulting in a one-yard TD catch by Blackmon from Weeden and a 24-yard scoring grab by Ian Anderson from Chelf to increase the Cowboys' lead to 56-7 at the half.
"We just turned the ball over. We all know you can't turn the ball over three or four times against a great football team like they are," said Kansas head coach Turner Gill. "They showed they take advantage of the opportunities."
Oklahoma State was forced to punt on its first possession of the second half and it was blocked by Nick Sizemore. Three plays later, James Sims scampered in for a 17-yard score.
After the teams traded punts, the Cowboys drove 73 yards on five plays, resulting in a 30-yard catch by Michael Harrison to make it a 63-14 game.
Alex Mueller missed a 36-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the third quarter, and Oklahoma State took the ensuing drive down the field thanks to long receptions by Harrison and Josh Stewart. Herschel Sims pushed his way in for the score from one-yard out to cap the drive.
Kansas added touchdowns on a Shepherd 68-yard catch and a 31-yard Pierson rush to finalize the scoring.
