Smith's two rushing touchdowns helps Oklahoma State beat Texas
Oct 16, 2011 - 1:39 AM Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Jeremy Smith rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries as the No. 6 Oklahoma State Cowboys took a 38-26 victory over the No. 22 Texas Longhorns.Brandon Weeden completed 23-of-41 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12). Justin Blackmon caught seven balls for 74 yards and a score.
"I think you've got to give those guys a lot of credit," Weeden said about Texas. "I really think their defense played outstanding."
Malcolm Brown recorded a career-high 135 yards with two touchdowns on 19 carries and David Ash threw for 139 yards and two interceptions on 22-of-40 passing for Texas (4-2, 1-2).
Holding a 21-10 lead, Oklahoma State received the kick at the start of the second half and Justin Gilbert returned it 100 yards up the middle for a touchdown. But Foswhitt Whittaker answered in turn by taking the ensuing kickoff 100 yards down the right sideline and in for the score, making it a 28-17 game less than 30 seconds into the third quarter.
Neither team was able to record a first down in the second half until D.J. Monroe took an end around on the first play of Texas' second possession of the third quarter and ran down the left sideline for a 21-yard gain. Oklahoma State was called for a pass interference on the next play to set up Brown's 24-yard TD run, bringing the Longhorns within four.
OSU matched that score with a 14-play drive down to Texas' four-yard line, but the Cowboys had to settle for a Quinn Sharp 22-yard field goal.
Texas was then forced to punt and Smith broke a 74-yard rush up the middle on the second play of the drive to give the Cowboys a 38-24 lead with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
The Longhorns' next possession stretched into the fourth quarter and reached the Oklahoma State three-yard line, but Whittaker made a falling catch at the one-foot line on 4th-and-goal to keep Texas off the board.
Two plays later, Weeden's right foot stepped out of the end zone on a pass attempt and Texas was awarded a safety.
Texas was held to a three-and-out on the possession after the safety, but its next try moved into OSU territory with under five minutes to go. The comeback attempt fell short, though, as Ash fumbled on a sack and the Cowboys recovered.
After trading punts for the first two possessions of the game, Texas took over at its own 22-yard line and drove to the Oklahoma State 33, but Ash was picked off by Caleb Lavey and Oklahoma State started a drive at their 36-yard line.
A Joseph Randle 15-yard rush put the ball in Longhorns' territory before Weeden found Josh Cooper on a deep post to place the ball at the Texas one- yard line. Randle rumbled in to the end zone on the next play to give Oklahoma State the early lead.
Texas was forced to punt from its 40-yard line on the first play of the second quarter. During the play, the ball bounced off the foot of an Oklahoma State blocker and Texas recovered at the Cowboys' 15. Brown broke a 15-yard rush off the right side of the line and into the end zone on the next play to tie the game at seven.
Each team traded punts before the Cowboys took over at their 37-yard line. Blackmon took a short pass and raced down the right sideline for 23 yards, placing the ball at the Texas 35. After converting a 4th-and-9 with a 16-yard completion to Blackmon, Weeden found Blackmon on a slant pass and the receiver fought off a defender and dove in for the 15-yard score to give the Cowboys a 14-7 lead with 8:34 left in the half.
"He's so good. He made some great throws, and those are not college throws, those are pro throws," Texas head coach Mack Brown said about Weeden.
Texas answered with an 11-play drive, converting two third downs on its way into the Oklahoma State red zone. But the drive stalled there and the Longhorns had to settle for a Justin Tucker 34-yard field goal.
The Cowboys then took over with a little over three minutes left in the half and Weeden connected on completions of 13 and 12 yards to Hubert Anyiam and an 11-yard pass to Smith to move into Texas' territory. Faced with a 4th-and-1 at the Longhorns' 30, Smith took a handoff up the middle and ran untouched for the score, giving Oklahoma State a 21-10 lead.
