No. 1 LSU routs Auburn, awaits Alabama

Oct 23, 2011 - 2:37 AM Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Rueben Randle and No. 1 LSU crafted another big win.

In fact, this one was historic.

Randle caught two long touchdown passes from Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee in the last five minutes of the first half, and LSU beat No. 19 Auburn 45-10 on Saturday for the most lopsided win in the 110-year history of the rivalry.

Up next for the top-ranked Tigers is a game against No. 2 Alabama on November 5 after both teams have a bye next week. Alabama beat Tennessee, 37-6, later Saturday.

"We know it's going to be a very tough fight," said LSU corner Ron Brooks, who scored on an interception.

Fans at Tiger Stadium could barely wait and were chanting "We want 'Bama! We want 'Bama!" as time ticked off in LSU's eighth straight win by double digits to start the season.

Lee, the starting quarterback, passed for 165 yards and Kenny Hilliard scored two touchdowns on the ground for LSU (8-0, 5-0 SEC), which has won its first eight games of the season for the fifth time in school history and first time since 1973.

Clint Moseley got his first career start at quarterback for Auburn (5-3, 3-2) and threw for 145 yards on 12-of-20 passing with an interception that was returned 28 yards by Brooks.

"Obviously, that was very disappointing. That's not our standard of how we need to play. The reality of it is we got beat in just about every phase of the game," said Auburn coach Gene Chizik.

"We made all the classic mistakes that prevent you from winning a game on the road. We turned the ball over in the kicking game, we turned the ball over throwing an interception for a touchdown."

LSU played without running back Spencer Ware and defensive backs Tyrann Mathieu and Tharold Simon, who were suspended for failing a drug test. Michael Ford started for Ware, LSU's leading rusher, and ran for 82 yards.

Not missing a beat, LSU turned a 7-3 lead into 21-3 on two quick strikes to Randle down the right sideline. He was wide-open behind two defenders on both passes, a 42-yarder from Jefferson and a 46-yarder from Lee.

"The first one was a stutter route. The dude kind of grabbed me so Jordan had to hold the ball a little bit. But he threw the ball great," said Randle, who said the second touchdown came on a go-route.

"I just beat him off the line," he said.

Lee hit Russell Shepard for a 10-yard touchdown after halftime, sparking a 21- point third quarter that turned the game into a rout.

Tahj Jones recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, leading to Hilliard's one-yard touchdown run, and Brooks stepped in front of Moseley's pass two plays into the next Auburn drive, taking it down the right sideline to make it 42-3.

Drew Alleman kicked a 36-yard field goal for LSU early in the fourth and Onterio McCalebb scored Auburn's only touchdown on a two-yard run with about two minutes remaining.

Prior to Saturday, the biggest win by either team had been a 41-7 Auburn victory in 1999. That was also the only other time either team had scored 40 points or more in the series.

LSU played its fourth straight game at the nation's No. 1 team and also sat atop the first BCS standings of the season. It stretched its winning streaks to 15 games at Tiger Stadium and nine games overall and has won its first five SEC games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1935-36.

LSU hasn't trailed since the second quarter of the Oregon game in Week 1 and that streak continued after Lee was a perfect 4-for-4 on the game's first drive and Hilliard scored on a nine-yard run to make it 7-0.

Cody Parkey kicked a 42-yard field goal later in the quarter for Auburn.

LSU has held its opponents without a touchdown in 24 of 32 quarters so far this season and has only trailed for a total of 6 minutes and 33 seconds out of a total of 480 minutes.

Moseley started for Barrett Trotter, who was lifted for Moseley in the second half of last week's 17-6 win over Florida...Since the 2000 season, the winner of the LSU-Auburn game has gone on to represent the SEC Western Division in the league's championship game six times...LSU holds a 24-20-1 lead in the all-time series...LSU has won six straight home games over Auburn and the home team has captured 11 of the last 12 games in the series...Auburn won last year's game, 24-16, on the way to its national championship.
