Barkley, USC take care of Hawaii in opener
Sep 2, 2012 - 6:23 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Barkley and Marqise Lee hooked up for a 75-yard touchdown on the game's opening play and Southern California began its season with a 49-10 romp of Hawaii.Barkley completed 23-of-38 throws for 372 yards and four touchdowns. Lee, who also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, ended with 10 receptions for 197 yards.
At 10-2, USC was one of the best teams in the country last season, but the Trojans (1-0) were banned from the postseason for a second straight year due to NCAA violations.
They're now eligible for the BCS, and third-year coach Lane Kiffin got his team off to a strong start Saturday.
"He did really well," Kiffin said of Barkley. "He was a couple of drops away from some big time numbers. He handled the hype really well."
Silas Redd, a transfer from Penn State, rushed nine times for 57 yards and a score.
Sean Schroeder finished 24-of-39 for 208 yards with a TD and a pair of interceptions for the Warriors (0-1), who began their inaugural season in the Mountain West after 33 years in the Western Athletic Conference. Hawaii went 6-7 last season.
Hawaii coach Norm Chow made his debut against USC, where he spent four seasons as offensive coordinator (2001-04).
"We made too many mistakes early in the game with some dropped balls and special teams and missed tackles," Chow said. "But there's a long way to go."
Lee took a short quick pass from Barkley on the left side of the field, faked out a tackler and dashed down the sideline to the end zone.
Later in the first quarter, Barkley led the Trojans on a 99-yard scoring drive, and capped it with a 20-yard TD pass to Robert Woods on the left side.
Redd fumbled the wall away later in the opening quarter, but Hayes Pullard returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead. Barkley failed on a pass for the 2-point conversion.
Redd scored on a 31-yard run to the right side of the field early in the second quarter, and it became 32-0 on Barkley's two-yard scoring toss to Woods with five minutes left in the half.
The Trojans forced a Schroeder fumble after a sack by George Uko, and Andre Heidari kicked a 28-yard field goal on the final play of the half.
"I agree with Woods, the offense was in the 'C' range," Barkley said. "We left a lot of points on the table. It felt like we could have scored 100 points in the first half."
Schroeder found Scott Harding for an 18-yard score on the opening possession of the third quarter, but Lee picked up a block near the USC 10-yard line on the ensuing kickoff and was off to the races down the right sideline to extend the lead to 42-7.
Tyler Hadden's 36-yard field goal in the third quarter and Barkley's 11-yard TD pass to Randall Telfer in the fourth finished the scoring.
"I thought we were prepared and came out with good energy," said Schroeder, a former Duke quarterback who graduated in only three years in Durham. "I'm proud of how the team played and fought until the end. We've got to execute more and cut down on the mental mistakes, myself included."
