No. 5 Georgia thumps Vandy
Sep 23, 2012 - 4:56 AM Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall each scored twice on the ground as No. 5 Georgia rolled to a 48-3 win over Vanderbilt in SEC action.Gurley carried the ball 16 times for 130 yards and Marshall finished with 10 touches for 82 yards for the Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0 SEC), who have won their first four games this season by a combined 124 points.
Aaron Murray was a crisp 18-for-24 with 250 yards and two touchdowns and added a score on the ground for Georgia, which totaled 567 yards of offense in the game.
"Start to finish, they all played so hard," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "We played with our blood a little hot, which was good. They got after it every snap and they played hard. I'm really proud of everyone."
Jordan Rodgers was 13-for-23 with 218 yards while Jordan Matthews had eight catches for 119 yards for the Commodores (1-3, 0-2), who were coming off a 58-0 thumping of Presbyterian last Saturday.
"I have to give credit to Georgia," said Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin. "They are a very good football team and are ranked in the top-5 in the nation for a reason. They did a really good job of running the ball with power and forced us to load the box, which opened up the passing game on the outside. I didn't feel like we played with the confidence that we normally play with on the outside."
Georgia's first touch lasted just over two minutes as the team moved the ball 47 yards in seven plays and Gurley bulled his way into the end zone from four yards out.
Vanderbilt got the ball across midfield on its next play, but had to punt after failing to convert on a 3rd-and-19.
The Bulldogs were held at their own 25 and punted, but Caleb Azubike ran into the punter and Georgia got a fresh set of downs. Two plays later, Marshall took a handoff up the middle and raced into the end zone on a 52-yard score. The snap on the extra point attempt was botched and it was a 13-0 game with 2:20 left in the first.
After again holding Vandy, the Bulldogs went on their third straight scoring drive as Murray found Tavarres King near the end zone and he took it in on a 22-yard score and a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Georgia was pinned at its own 4 after forcing another punt from the Commodores, but they didn't let that faze them as Murray capped the 12-play, 96-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper and a 27-0 lead.
Vanderbilt got on the board late in the first half thanks to a 29-yard field goal from Carey Spear to make it a 27-3 game at the break.
Georgia was finally held out of the end zone on its first touch of the second half, but its second drive bore fruit as Murray found Marlon Brown in the left side of the end zone on a 6-yard score with 9:04 left in the third for a 34-3 lead.
Marshall added a 2-yard score and Gurley had a 29-yard run into the end zone later in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 45-point lead heading into the final stanza.
