Sooners clobber Kansas

Oct 21, 2012 - 4:16 AM Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Landry Jones threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, as the 10th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners destroyed the Kansas Jayhawks, 52-7, at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Jones completed 19-of-28 passes and Kenny Stills added six catches for 90 yards and a score for the Sooners (5-1, 3-1 Big 12), who have won three straight heading into a top-10 clash with undefeated Notre Dame next Saturday in Norman.

"We've been very disciplined with how we're playing," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said of his team. "It was another really solid game. Now it's on to Notre Dame."

Justin Brown returned a punt 90 yards for a score and Roy Finch added a 100- yard kickoff return touchdown, marking the first time in school history that the Sooners have had both a kick return and punt return for a touchdown in the same game.

Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings couldn't get anything going against the stout OU defense, as he managed just 111 yards on 10-of-21 passing with a pair of interceptions for the Jayhawks (1-6, 0-3), who have lost six straight.

"It hurts because this is the first time this year that a game got away from us in the first half," Kansas coach Charlie Weis admitted. "We haven't had a game this year where it got away from us in the first half."

Oklahoma got a 37-yard field goal from Michael Hunnicutt on its opening possession before Jones completed all four of his passes on a 4-play, 87-yard drive, including a 44-yard scoring strike to Stills for a 10-0 lead.

Kansas seemed poised to score when Brown muffed a punt deep in OU territory on the Jayhawks' ensuing possession, but the Sooners quickly regained control as Tom Wort sacked Kansas backup quarterback Dayne Crist and forced a fumble, which was scooped up by Casey Walker and returned 45 yards to the Kansas 28.

The Sooners capitalized on the turnover early in the second, as Blake Bell punched it in from a yard out to extend the margin to 17-0.

Oklahoma then forced another Kansas punt, which Brown returned 90 yards down the sideline for a score, as he stretched the ball inside the pylon to give the Sooners a 24-0 lead with 10:04 left in the second.

Cummings was intercepted on Kansas' next drive and Oklahoma added to its lead shortly after when Damien Williams carried it in from four yards away.

After another Kansas punt, Jones hit Sterling Shepard in the corner of the end zone for a 9-yard scoring strike to extend the margin to 38-0 heading into locker room.

Finch returned the opening kick of the second half 100 yards for a score and after a Kansas three-and-out, Jones completed his next four passes, including a 25-yard TD pass to Trey Millard to press the lead to 52-0.

The Jayhawks cracked the scoreboard late in the fourth as James Sims scored from a yard out to cap a 19-play, 80-yard drive.
