Washington hands No. 7 Oregon State first loss
Oct 28, 2012 - 6:57 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Travis Coons' 30-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter lifted Washington over No. 7 Oregon State, 20-17, at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.Coons also connected on a 45-yard kick, while Bishop Sankey carried the ball 25 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns for Washington (4-4, 2-3 Pac-12), which snapped a three-game losing streak.
Keith Price went 18-for-30 through the air for 194 yards and an interception in the win.
"I thought our kids showed a great deal of resiliency. It was a tremendous amount of adversity that they were faced with in the game and they continued to show the mental and physical toughness that teams need to possess to beat a top-10 ranked team opponent," Washington coach Steve Sarkisian said.
Sean Mannion completed 18-of-34 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted four times for the Beavers (6-1, 4-1), who were denied their first 7-0 start in school history.
Cody Vaz replaced Mannion in the fourth quarter and threw for 97 yards and a score on 7-of-11 efficiency.
Brandin Cooks caught nine balls for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Storm Woods had 90 yards on 15 carries for Oregon State.
"Obviously we are disappointed but there is a long road ahead of us. We will bounce back and prepare for the next game," Mannion said about the loss. "There is a long road ahead of us and all we can do is learn and that's the approach we are going to take."
Oregon State received the ball to start the third quarter trailing 10-0 and moved down to the Washington 28 with the aid of a 17-yard run by Cooks, but Mannion's pass on 4th-and-5 fell incomplete to keep the Beavers off the board.
The Huskies would manage just one first down on their ensuing possession, and Mannion found Cooks for a 54-yard touchdown two plays later to bring Oregon State within 10-7.
The Beavers regained the ball at their own 34 following another Washington punt, and a 45-yard reception by Richard Mullaney set up Trevor Romaine's 29- yard field goal to knot the game at 10 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter.
Mannion was intercepted by Travis Feeney on Oregon State's next touch, which stretched into the fourth quarter, but the Huskies could not convert on the turnover and were forced to punt.
But Mannion was again picked off by Marcus Peters three plays later and he returned the ball 26 yards down to the Oregon State 30.
After Kasen Williams' 29-yard reception gave the Huskies the ball at the one, Sankey rumbled across the goal line for a 17-10 advantage with just over eight minutes to play.
Oregon State, though, quickly moved down the field to tie the game as Vaz hit Cooks, Connor Hamlett and Woods for double-digit gains before finding Hamlett for a 29-yard touchdown to make it a 17-17 game.
The back-and-forth affair continued on Washington's ensuing possession when Austin Seferian-Jenkins hauled in a 20-yard gain and Williams pulled down a 19-yard reception to move the ball inside the Beavers' red zone, setting up Coons' game-deciding 30-yard field goal with 1:20 remaining.
Vaz's was then sacked on a 3rd-and-10 at the Washington 38 before failing to connect with Kevin Cummings on fourth down to seal the victory for the Huskies.
After the teams traded punts over the first two possessions of the game, Coons capped a 12-play, 66-yard march with a 45-yard field goal to give Washington a 3-0 lead with a little over three minutes left in the first quarter.
The Beavers converted three third downs on the ensuing drive, including one with a defensive holding penalty, as they moved the ball as far as the Washington 17, but Mannion was intercepted by Sean Parker in the end zone to give the ball to the Huskies with 12:50 left in the second quarter.
Oregon State regained the ball at the Washington 43 following a three-and-out by the Huskies, but Mannion was picked off by Justin Glenn at the Washington 15 on the Beavers' next offensive play to give the ball right back to the Huskies.
Washington would be forced to punt again, but following an Oregon State punt, Michael Hartvigson's 31-yard catch placed the ball at the Beavers' 5-yard line, setting up Sankey's 1-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 advantage with 4:09 remaining in the half.
Price was intercepted by Sean Martin on Washington's next touch, but the Beavers failed to convert on a 4th-and-8 at the Huskies' 32 to keep it a 10-0 game at the break.
Game Notes
Washington leads the all-time series between the teams, 59-34-4 ... Oregon State outgained the Huskies 427-293 ... Woods added 37 yards on four receptions ... Williams led all Washington receivers with 61 yards on five catches.
