Vaz lifts No. 13 Oregon State over Arizona State

Nov 4, 2012 - 8:32 AM Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Cody Vaz had three touchdown passes as No. 13 Oregon State took a 36-26 win over Arizona State in Pac-12 play.

Vaz passed for 267 yards with one interception on 14-for-33 attempts while Terron Ward had 19 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown for the Beavers (7-1, 5-1 Pac-12), who bounced back from last week's loss to Washington.

"When you win they are all good wins but that was a really good win," Oregon State coach Mile Riley said. "We have a lot of respect for that football team (ASU) and the way that they have been playing."

Taylor Kelly was just 22-for-41 with 153 yards, one touchdown and an interception while Cameron Marshall ran in a touchdown for the Sun Devils (5-4, 3-3), who have dropped their past three games.

It didn't take long for the Sun Devils to get the lead and they did it before their offense even took the field as Junior Onyeail recovered a Vaz fumble at the 1-yard line and took it in for a 7-0 lead.

Oregon State regained its composure and went on a 49-yard, 7-play drive that saw Trevor Romaine kick a 41-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game less than four minutes in.

Arizona State came right back down the field as the team covered 75 yards in nine snaps with Marshall punching the ball in from a yard out for a 14-3 lead with 8:44 left in the first.

The Beavers answered quickly, though, as the second play saw Vaz and Markus Wheaton getting together on a 50-yard score.

Later in the first, Keith Kostol had to punt in his own end zone and Kevin Ayers was able to block it for a safety and a 16-10 lead with 1:27 to play in the first quarter.

The free kick for Arizona State saw the team get a 31-yard field goal from Jon Mora and a 19-10 lead, but things fell apart for the Sun Devils after that.

Terron Ward busted for a 53-yard touchdown run on the third play of Oregon State's ensuing drive and it was a 19-16 game as the extra point attempt was blocked.

Oregon State ran off the final 5:47 of the second quarter clock with a 14- play, 58-yard drive that saw Romaine end the frame with a 45-yard field goal to tie the contest at 19-all.

"Our guys played hard. We did some great things. We scored a touchdown early and we had a lot of momentum in the first quarter," Arizona State coach Todd Graham said. "But you have to give them (OSU) credit. They came back and captured the momentum in the second quarter."

On the Beavers' first possession of the third quarter, the team went 52 yards and the fifth play saw Vaz and Wheaton hook up again for a 17-yard score and a 26-19 lead.

Romaine's 33-yard field goal with 3:02 to play in the third made it a 29-19 game with 3:02 to play in the third and Mora followed that with a 37-yard missed field goal.

A 49-yard touchdown catch from Brandin Cooks on a pass by Vaz gave the Beavers a 36-19 lead with 10:54 to play and it put the game away.

Kelly tossed his only score of the game with 22 seconds to play as Marion Grice caught a 2-yard TD pass to account for the final score.
