Georgia rolls over Ole Miss

Nov 4, 2012 - 3:52 AM Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Aaron Murray threw for 384 yards and four touchdowns and seventh-ranked Georgia overcame a slow start to cruise to a 37- 10 victory over Ole Miss at Sanford Stadium.

Murray completed 21-of-28 passes in bringing the Bulldogs back from an early 10-0 deficit, while Todd Gurley rushed for 117 yards on 18 carries to help Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) move one step closer to sewing up a berth in the SEC Championship Game.

The Bulldogs need only to win at Auburn, which is currently 0-6 in conference play, next Saturday to capture the SEC East.

"We're one game away from our goal of winning the Eastern Division," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "We've got a lot of work to do between now and then. It's never easy going to Auburn. They'll be playing out of their minds. We've got to be prepared for that."

Bo Wallace threw for 187 yards with one touchdown and an interception on 16-of-25 passing for a Mississippi (5-4, 2-3 SEC) squad that came to Athens off back-to-back wins over Auburn and Arkansas that snapped a 16-game SEC losing streak.

The Rebels were no match for the reigning SEC East champions, however, with Georgia outgaining Ole Miss by a 533-234 margin in total yards for the game.

"It was obviously a pretty good beating that Georgia put on us today," Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said. "Offensively, we just couldn't make any plays to give our defense much hope. It was the first time this season that I felt like we were zapped of our passion."

Georgia had a sluggish beginning to their first outing that followed last week's huge win over rival Florida, before Murray sparked a run of 37 unanswered points by exploiting a leaky Ole Miss secondary on several occasions.

With Georgia down 10-0 early in the second quarter, the standout signal-caller hit a wide-open Marlon Brown deep down the seam and the senior wideout outraced the Rebel defense for a 66-yard touchdown with 10:30 left before intermission.

The teams would trade turnovers over a strange one-minute span shortly afterward, with the Bulldogs fumbling twice in Ole Miss territory and the Rebels losing a fumble and having Wallace intercepted on a long pass attempt.

Once the flurry was over, Georgia would strike again near the end of the half to surge ahead.

Murray got the ball back on his own 16 with 3:32 remaining and moved the Bulldogs to the Mississippi 25 as time wound down. A pair of sacks would push Georgia back to the 40 with 12 seconds left, but Murray eluded another heavy rush on the next play before finding Tavarres King on a fly route in the end zone with just three seconds on the clock to enable the Bulldogs to head to the locker room up 14-10.

Georgia's passing game produced another big play in the early stages of the second half, with Murray firing a bomb to Malcolm Mitchell down the right sideline for a 42-yard score with just over two minutes elapsed in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs then forced a quick three-and-out, and Murray orchestrated another long touchdown drive in which the junior quarterback was again on point.

He completed all four of his throws on the 6-play, 77-yard sequence, including a 30-yard bullet to Brown followed by a 19-yard delivery to Jay Rome that placed the ball on the Rebels' 16. Three plays later, fullback Alexander Ogletree plowed across the goal line on an 8-yard draw to make the score 28-10 with 9:17 to go in the third quarter.

The Georgia defense got into the act later on in the period, with Alec Ogletree taking down Jeff Scott in the end zone on a shotgun handoff to extend the Bulldogs' advantage to 20 points.

Murray's fourth and final touchdown pass of the day, a 23-yard hookup with Rantavious Wooten, closed out the scoring with 8:29 left. The score was set up by Gurley's 31-yard run deep into Ole Miss territory.

The Rebels seized the initial momentum by marching 58 yards on eight plays during the game's opening drive, highlighted by a 51-yard catch-and-run by Ferbia Allen on the fourth play from scrimmage that led to Bryson Rose's 34- yard field goal.

After Ole Miss caused a second straight Georgia drive to stall, Wallace went to work on an impressive 6-play, 70-yard possession that lengthened the margin to double digits.

He went 5-for-5 for 53 yards in the series and capped it with a 13-yard toss to Jamal Mosley that staked the Rebels to a 10-0 lead with 11:45 remaining in the half.

Brown hauled in Murray's bomb just 1:15 later, however, and Georgia would limit Ole Miss to a mere 76 total yards over the remainder of the contest.

Game Notes

Brown ended with 113 yards on just three catches ... Mississippi had been 4-0 when scoring first this season prior to Saturday's matchup ... Georgia has now prevailed in each of its last 10 meetings with Ole Miss, with the Rebels' last win in the series coming in 1996 ... The Rebels have now lost 12 consecutive times to ranked opponents, with their last victory over one coming against Oklahoma State in the 2010 Cotton Bowl.
