Gilbert, Chelf power Oklahoma State past Kansas

Nov 10, 2013 - 1:42 AM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Gilbert wasted no time getting 15th-ranked Oklahoma State on the board in its inter-conference matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Gilbert returned the opening kickoff 100 yards and Oklahoma State (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) used a dominant first half for a 42-6 win over the Jayhawks at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Cowboys' quarterback Clint Chelf passed for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns on 19- of-37 passing while running back Desmond Roland scored a pair of touchdowns, one rushing and another receiving.

Wide receiver Tracy Moore added six receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys, who have scored 20 or more in 47 straight games, which is the longest active streak in the nation.

Kansas (2-7, 0-6), which lost its 27th consecutive conference game, interchanged quarterbacks throughout the game with BYU transfer Jake Heaps and freshman Montell Cozart splitting snaps under center.

Heaps finished with 56 yards on 4-of-8 passing with an interception and Cozart, a more versatile option, rushed for 55 yards on 18 attempts and completed 6-of-17 for 58 yards.

On the first play of the Jawhawks' second possession, Heaps went deep for Tony Pierson but the ball was intercepted by Kevin Peterson and returned 38 yards to the Kansas 34-yard line.

Roland capped the short, 34-yard drive with a 3-yard run off the left tackle for a touchdown.

Cozart entered the game for Heaps on Kansas' fourth march of the game. He completed his first pass on 3rd-and-4 to Connor Embree for 10 yards up to the Kansas 47, but the drive stalled and they were forced to punt.

Early in the second quarter, Kansas finally had some momentum on the offensive side of the ball. Cozart rushed the right end on 3rd-and-2, was bottled up but reversed field and tipped-toed down the sideline for a 3-yard gain and a first down.

Pierson then followed on the next play with a reverse for 50 yards down to the Oklahoma St. 15-yard line. Kansas failed to gain a yard after that and kicker Ron Doherty's 32-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright to keep the Jayhawks scoreless.

Following the missed field goal, Kansas' JaCorey Shepherd was flagged for pass interference and Chelf hit Moore for 41 yards on the ensuing play. Two plays later, Chelf lofted a pass to a wide-open Roland for 19 yards and the score.

On 3rd-and-10 with 33 seconds left in the half, on the Kansas 43, Chelf hit David Glidden on a crossing pattern for 39 yards down to the Kansas 4-yard line.

Following a timeout, Chelf hit Moore on a fade to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown and a four score lead heading into the break.

After two scoreless possessions from each team to open the second half, Cozart hooked up with Andrew Turzilli for a 39-yard pitch and catch, and running back James Sims followed with a 19-yard run down to the Oklahoma State 22-yard line. On 3rd-and-8, Cozart fumbled the snap but recovered and Doherty connected on his second attempt, a 40-yard field goal, to get the Jayhawks on the board.

Chelf used the third and fourth quarter for a swift touchdown drive following a turnover-on-downs for the Jayhawks. He hit Marcell Alterman for 34 yards to put the Cowboys inside the red zone at the Kansas 13 and later connected with Moore for the second time of the day on an 11-yard score.

Doherty added a 29-yard field goal for Kansas who failed to score on a drive that began with a 69-yard kickoff return from Shepherd.

Jeremy Smith rushed for a 15-yard touchdown midway through the final frame to round out the scoring.
