Washington routs No. 19 Boise State
Sep 1, 2013 - 5:24 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Washington re-opened Husky Stadium Saturday with an emphatic 38-6 thumping of 19th-ranked Boise State, as the Huskies racked up 592 total yards and scored 28 unanswered points to win going away.Keith Price threw for 324 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while Bishop Sankey rushed for 161 yards and two scores on 25 carries for the Huskies (1-0), who avenged last seasons's Las Vegas Bowl loss to the Broncos.
Boise State (0-1) dropped its season opener for the second straight season, though Saturday's loss was much more humbling than its 17-13 setback at Michigan State a year ago.
Joe Southwick threw for just 152 yards and an interception on 25-of-40 passes.
An extensive renovation of Husky Stadium forced Washington to play all its games last season at CenturyLink Field. The 18-month hiatus was well worth the wait for the Husky faithful after Price recovered from throwing an interception on the second play from scrimmage.
The senior signal-caller carried Washington to a 16-play, 84-yard trek on its second possession that ended with Sankey barreling in from a yard out.
Boise State's Dan Goodale had a 34-yard field goal attempt blocked on the ensuing touch, but countered Travis Coons' 30-yarder with a 37-yard kick just before halftime.
Another promising Boise State drive out of the break stalled inside the 5-yard line, and Goodale was called in for a 20-yarder.
It was all Huskies from there.
Price and Kasen Williams, after hooking up for 38 yards, connected on the next play for a 19-yard score midway through the third quarter.
After Jay Ajayi was stuffed on 4th-and-1 from the Washington 35-yard line, the Huskies went right down the field and scored when Price rolled to his left, threw across his body and found Joshua Perkins in the back of the end zone for an 18-yard TD late in the third.
Sankey and Dwayne Washington each ran for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to complete the blowout.
Game Notes
Washington's Jaydon Mickens had a game-high nine catch for 109 yards ... Ajayi led the Broncos with 93 yards on 23 carries ... The Huskies last played at their home stadium on Nov. 5, 2011 ... The Broncos fell to 6-2 against Pac-12 schools under head coach Chris Petersen ... Washington next plays at Illinois on Sept. 14 ... Boise State hosts Tennessee-Martin next Saturday.
- Travis Coons extra point is good.
