USC buries Colorado to continue late roll

Nov 24, 2013 - 8:02 AM Boulder, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Javorius Allen rushed for 145 yards and three scores to boost Southern California to a 47-29 win over Colorado.

Cody Kessler completed 19-of-28 passes for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Trojans (9-3, 6-2 Pac-12), who won their fifth straight game and moved to 8-0 all-time against the Buffaloes. USC improved to 6-1 under interim head coach Ed Orgeron.

In a game played in 29-degree weather, the Trojans were denied a chance at the Pac-12 South title following Arizona State's victory at UCLA. USC closes the regular season against the Bruins next Saturday.

Sefo Liufau connected on 17-of-33 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Colorado (4-7, 1-7), which has lost four of its last five games.

Allen's 23-yard TD run midway through the third quarter widened the gap to 37-7.

"We came out and played lights out defense in the first half," Orgeron said. "We made some substitutions in the third and the fourth quarter that didn't play as well as we wanted them to and they got back in the game. Overall, we remained pretty healthy for the game and we'll be ready for next week."

The Buffaloes eventually got within 11 points. Liufau's 5-yard connection to Paul Richardson plus the 2-point conversion pass to D.D. Goodson, had the Buffs within 40-29 with 3:19 left.

USC recovered the onside kick and Soma Vainuku busted off a 52-yard TD run to seal the outcome.

After USC built its 30-point advantage, Liufau found Nelson Spruce for a 38- yard score early in the fourth. Andre Heidari converted a 39-yard field goal for USC, but Micha Adkins II scored on a 3-yard run to draw the Buffaloes within 40-21.

"I think Sefo covered it pretty much. It was a lack of execution," Spruce said. "The coaches had a good plan for us going in, but it was either one thing or another that was falling apart. It just didn't allow us to move the ball like we wanted to."

Allen scored on a 12-yard run to cap USC's first possession and a blocked punt resulted in a safety for a 9-0 margin later in the first.

Allen's 1-yard scoring run and a 20-yard TD pass from Kessler to Nelson Agholor moved the lead to 23-0 at halftime.

Jered Bell stripped Allen of the football and scored on a 31-yard fumble return on the opening play from scrimmage in the third quarter, but Kessler found Randall Telfer for a 10-yard TD on the next USC possession.
