High-powered Oklahoma pounds Tulsa

Sep 22, 2007 - 7:25 AM TULSA, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Oklahoma's high-powered offense continued to steamroll its opponents.

Sam Bradford threw three touchdowns and three different running backs ran for five more scores as the fourth-ranked Sooners routed in-state rival Tulsa, 62-21, at Skelly Stadium on Friday night.

Juaquin Iglesias caught two TDs for Oklahoma (4-0), which crushed Utah State last week, 54-3. The Sooners started the campaign by slamming North Texas and Miami by a combined score of 130-23 in back-to-back routs.

"I liked the way it went," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "We started off by going right down the field, and then we had a foolish penalty that put us back. Offensively, outside of penalties, we did a good job. We ran the ball great and Sam was outstanding throwing the ball."

It was no different in this one for Oklahoma, which entered Friday's game leading the nation in scoring at 61.33 points per game. But before the Sooners could run away with the contest, the Golden Hurricanes got on the board first.

Jesse Meyer caught a 15-yard touchdown from Paul Smith to make it 7-0 with 9:57 left in the first quarter. But Oklahoma answered back thanks to Allen Patrick, who ran for a 29-yard score to tie the game with 3:20 left in the opening quarter.

"Defensively, they had us on our heels at first, but we settled in and played quite well," Stoops said. "I think we will learn from this and improve in the areas that we need to. We gave up some big plays with deep passes, but then we started to create some turnovers and made some plays to force interceptions."

Bradford found Iglesias with a 46-yard strike to cap a quick three-play, 50-yard drive to make it 14-7. The freshman signal-caller was 15-of-21 for 242 yards with one interception.

"We can always improve things in the red zone and try to eliminate the penalties," Bradford said of his team's success. "I have to try to eliminate the turnovers the best I can because we had points on the board in the first half, but I had a costly interception. I need to limit those."

He added a 21-yard TD toss to give the Sooners a two-touchdown advantage with 8:50 left in the the second quarter. Bradford also connected with Iglesias on a 40-yard score to make it 48-21 on the first play of the final period.

Oklahoma, which racked up 286 rushing yards, received rushing touchdowns from Patrick (two), DeMarco Murray (two) and Mossis Madu (one). Madu provided the final margin with a five-yard plunge with 5:20 left in the game for the Sooners, who outscored the Golden Hurricanes, 20-0, in the fourth quarter.

Smith threw for 350 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Tulsa (2-1), which had 10 penalties for 93 yards.

"I think we have a lot of things to learn," Smith said. "As you will see on film, as with any loss, we were real close on a lot of things, and that is why I think we didn't necessarily do too bad. I definitely think we could have done some of them a little bit better."

  • dtul This Tulsa team is much better than the 2005 team that held OU to a mere TWO POINT lead midway through the fourth quarter...
OU should watch out, or they're going to be taken by surprise.
