Despite injury, White leads West Virginia past Syracuse

Oct 6, 2007 - 9:29 PM SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- This time, Pat White's injury didn't hurt West Virginia.

The Heisman Trophy hopeful ran for a touchdown and threw for another as 13th-ranked West Virginia blasted Syracuse, 55-14, in a lopsided Big East Conference tilt on Saturday.

A game-time decision to start after missing the second half of last week's 21-13 loss to South Florida with a thigh bruise, White also was forced out of this game with an injury.

"Pat (White) has a strained muscle," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said. "We think he will be fine with the open week (October 13). I thought Pat played really well."

White left in the third quarter Saturday and did not return after suffering what team trainers initially called a "rib irritation." Unlike the September 28 loss to South Florida, the Mountaineers' first of the season, the junior departed with the game well in hand.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-1 Big East) rolled to a 31-7 halftime lead and held a 38-7 advantage when their signal-caller was injured at the 8:25 mark of the third quarter. White finished 12-of-15 for 148 yards and no interceptions while carrying 14 times for 89 yards.

"Losing takes some confidence from you, and it's important to get it back by making plays," Rodriguez said. "I felt that we had it back at halftime just by hearing the guys talk."

Fullback Owen Schmitt contributed two short touchdown runs and Steve Slaton carried 15 times for 72 yards as the Mountaineers beat the Orange (1-5, 1-1) for the sixth consecutive time.

West Virginia's offense was able to strike quickly after defensive back Ryan Mundy intercepted Orange quarterback Andrew Robinson on the opening drive and returned the ball to the 12.

Schmitt scored from seven yards out moments later after taking an option pitch from White.

"Owen has tailback skills and he is obviously hard to bring down when he gets going," Rodriguez said. "They were playing us a certain way that gave us a chance to get it to him. They were trying to make sure that Pat didn't hurt them on the perimeter and that opened things up for Owen."

Syracuse tied the game on its ensuing drive when Curtis Brinkley capped a 10-play drive with a one-yard leap, but the Mountaineers ran away with things thereafter.

Leading 14-7 in the second quarter, West Virginia took control when defensive lineman Keilen Dykes intercepted Robinson and returned the ball 19 yards for a score.

Schmitt's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard plunge, and a 49-yard field goal by Pat McAfee in the final minutes of the half all but salted away the game.

"I'm very disappointed. I expected to see a closer margin than what it turned out to be," Syracuse coach Greg Robinson said. "It's frustrating and I think it's a real challenge for us right now. We have to dig deep right now and find a way to fight back."

Andrew Robinson finished 5-of-15 for 100 yards with one touchdown and the two interceptions.

"Somebody jinxed him when one of you guys asked me on Tuesday about him not throwing an interception in 197 passes or whatever it was (104)," Greg Robinson said. "I didn't have any clue and I hated that I heard that. I'm not trying to be funny, I'm not. It did click in my head."

Darius Reynaud hauled in White's only touchdown pass of the game, a 20-yard strike, early in the third quarter. Jarrett Brown and Jock Sanders also got in the end zone for the Mountaineers, who gave Rodriguez his 100th career win.

"That's nice, but I haven't played a single play in any of those games," Rodriguez said.
