McCoy does it all as Texas trounces FAU
Aug 31, 2008 - 6:47 AM AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- While Texas honored Vince Young on Saturday night, Colt McCoy turned in a performance reminiscent of the former Longhorns star.McCoy had over 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing to lead No. 10 Texas to a 52-10 rout of Florida Atlantic on Saturday in the season opener for both schools.
Young led the Longhorns to the national championship in 2005, a season that he capped with a memorable performance against Southern California in the BCS title game at the Rose Bowl. Texas honored Young by retiring his No. 10 jersey on Saturday, and McCoy honored him with a Young-like effort.
McCoy completed his first 13 passes and finished 24-of-29 for 223 yards and three touchdowns. He added 12 rushes for 103 yards and another score.
"Colt (McCoy) was great and we didn't have a turnover and John Chiles has obviously improved as a quarterback and with his passing game," Longhorns coach Mack Brown said. "I'm very pleased. This was a great win and that was probably our best opener."
McCoy threw for two of his TD passes and ran for a score in the first half, as the Longhorns opened up a 28-10 lead. He threw a 2-yard pass to Chris Ogbonnaya with 3:15 left in the first quarter to put the Longhorns up 14-0. McCoy's 2-yard TD run 3:25 before the half made it 28-3.
He threw his final TD pass in the third quarter, a 5-yarder to Blaine Irby with 7:25 left, to extend the lead to 42-10.
"We were focused and we had a great fall camp, and that is just coming from playing against our defense every day," McCoy said. "That just makes us that much better. We just wanted to come out and do what they told us to do, just to play the game. that all the time. I felt like overall, we executed well."
McCoy, who left the game early in the fourth quarter, joined Young as the only Longhorn quarterbacks to pass for 200 yards and run for 100 in a game more than once. Young accomplished the feat five times and McCoy has now done it twice.
Rusty Smith was 15-of-31 for 253 yards, a TD and an interception for the Owls, who scored all 10 of their points in the second quarter.
"We were beaten badly and soundly by a very good Texas football team," Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "They were better prepared. They were playing at home in front of a monumental crowd in a near cathedral stadium. It was a great spectacle to be a part of."
