McCoy ties freshman touchdown record as Texas holds off Iowa
Dec 31, 2006 - 6:34 AM SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Ticker) -- Colt McCoy helped Texas achieve a feat no other team in the country has done.McCoy threw two touchdowns and tied a record for TDs by a freshman quarterback as No. 18 Texas posted a 26-24 victory over Iowa in the Alamo Bowl.
Named the game's Offensive Player of the Game, McCoy completed 26-of-40 passes for 308 yards. His two scoring tosses gave him 29 on the season, tying the NCAA Division I-A record by a freshman signal-caller set by Nevada's David Neill in 1998.
"We were just gonna do whatever it took to win," McCoy said. "We didn't know what Iowa was going to do in the game, but we were just gonna take what they gave us on every snap and eventually chip away. That was our mentality coming into the game."
McCoy helped the Longhorns achieve a 10-3 record, marking the sixth straight season the team has won 10 games - the longest current streak in the nation.
"I had confidence out there," McCoy said. "Coach Brown talked about dedication and family and I dedicated this game to our three senior offensive linemen who are like family to me."
After throwing a 20-yard TD to Limas Sweed with a minute remaining in the second quarter to cut the Longhorns' deficit to 14-10, McCoy found Jamaal Charles for a 72-yard score with 7:30 left in the third period to give Texas a 20-14 lead.
Charles rushed for 26 yards for Texas, which was held to 70 yards on the ground. However, Selvin Young, who was held to just 11 yards on 12 carries, found the end zone from two yards out 4:01 into the final quarter to give the Longhorns a 26-21 advantage.
"Nobody gave up and everybody believed and kept playing," McCoy said.
"Congratulations to Texas," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "Both teams played extremely well. I feel bad for our team, but am appreciative of our seniors."
Drew Tate was 15-of-25 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Iowa (6-7), which lost its last four games.
"Drew Tate played well," Ferentz said. "It was one of his best performances. We had a lot of positives but you just hate to lose your last game of the season."
Andy Brodell caught six passes for 159 yards and two scores for the Hawkeyes, who fell to 2-2 in Alamo Bowl appearances and 11-10-1 all-time in postseason games.
