TCU tries to match school-record winning streak vs. BYU

Sep 26, 2006 - 9:14 PM BYU (2-2) at No. 17 TCU (4-0), 6:00 pm EDT

FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) - No. 17 TCU attempts to extend its winning streak to a school record-tying 14 games when it opens defense of its Mountain West Conference title against BYU on Thursday in the league opener for both teams.

Last year, the Horned Frogs' first in the MWC, they rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Cougars in overtime, 51-50, en route to going undefeated in conference play to capture the league title.

Despite last year's victory, the Horned Frogs trail the all-time series against their former Western Athletic Conference rival, 3-2.

TCU (4-0), which can match the program-record winning streak set between 1937-38, has not played since shutting down Texas Tech's high-powered offense in a 12-3 victory on September 16.

BYU (2-2) rebounded from a 34-33 loss in double overtime at Boston College with a 38-0 rout of WAC member Utah State last Saturday. It was the Cougars' first shutout since a 29-0 win over UNLV in 1999.

Starting in place of the injured John Beck, Jason Beck - no relation - threw for 305 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while Fui Vakapuna rushed for 73 yards and three TDs on 13 carries.
