Tennessee State beats SE Missouri State 23-17

Oct 4, 2009 - 2:17 AM NASHVILLE, Tenn.(AP) -- Calvin McNairl ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, helping Tennessee State hold off Southeast Missouri State 23-17 on Saturday night.

McNairl was 10-for-15 with 95 yards and an interception and rushed for 122 yards on 20 carries for the Tigers (2-3, 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference). Joseph Hills caught seven balls for 69 yards and a score.

The Tigers quarterback ran for a 7-yard score to put his team up 7-0 in the opening quarter then threw a 14-yard TD to Hills for a 13-3 lead midway through the second. Matt Scheible connected with Miles Edwards on a 44-yard score to pull the Redhawks (1-4, 0-3) within 13-10 at halftime.

McNairl's 13-yard rushing touchdown put the Tigers ahead 23-10 midway through the fourth. Scheible's 18-yard scoring pass to Walter Peoples pulled the Redhawks within the final margin.
