Snead leads Mississippi to 48-13 rout of UAB
Oct 18, 2009 - 3:46 AM OXFORD, Miss.(AP) -- Jevan Snead threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns as Mississippi defeated Alabama-Birmingham 48-13 on Saturday night. One week after throwing four interceptions against Alabama, Snead was 15-for-22 with no interceptions for the Rebels (4-2).
Freshman Rodney Scott rushed for two second-quarter touchdowns for Ole Miss and was one of four players to score their first career touchdowns.
Freshman Jesse Grandy returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score and junior Lionel Breaux scored on his seventh reception of the season. Sophomore Andrew Harris caught touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring 13 seconds into the game, Ole Miss struggled offensively and managed just 45 yards of total offense in the first quarter. But the Rebels came to life after that, scoring on six consecutive possessions.
Quarterback Joe Webb rushed for 121 yards, threw for 89 yards and scored the only touchdown for UAB (2-4). Playing their first game in 16 days, the Blazers didn't get on the scoreboard until they trailed 41-0.
The Rebels were looking for a breakout game after last week's loss to Alabama put a damper on many of their preseason dreams.
Mississippi got a quick shot in the arm when Grandy received the kickoff at the 12-yard line, leaped over teammate Brandon Sanders, who was blocking near the 30-yard line, and broke free down the right sideline.
"I got the ball and saw where I was going," Grandy said.
In the second and third quarters, Snead began to shake off last week's performance, throwing for all but 34 of his yards. He threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Markeith Summers on the Rebels' first play of the second half.
Snead did not play in the fourth quarter because of the large lead.
"I'm proud of our offense," Snead said. "We came back and really got things rolling. This is what needed to happen, and we stepped up and did a good job."
Backup quarterback Nathan Stanley was 6 of 9 for 98 yards and a score.
Ole Miss gained 501 yards on offense, compared to 351 for UAB.
Scott led the Rebels on the ground with 57 yards on nine carries, and Brandon Bolden rushed for 56 yards on 12 rushes. Shay Hodge caught a team-high seven passes for 99 yards.
Thanks to Webb, the Blazers rushed for 230 yards. No Blazer caught more than two passes.
UAB's Josh Zahn kicked two fourth-quarter field goals, including one as time expired.
