Robinson throws 3 TDs, Oklahoma State beats Baylor
Oct 24, 2009 - 9:24 PM By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Sports WriterWACO, Texas(AP) -- Zac Robinson pondered the question about if he is playing the best he ever has, then never really provided an answer.
"Looking back, maybe," Oklahoma State's senior quarterback said. "But I'm not real sure."
While he may not have been willing to verbalize it, Robinson's play Saturday in a 34-7 victory over Baylor provided an emphatic affirmative answer.
With injured running back Kendall Hunter and suspended receiver Dez Bryant still missing from the lineup, Robinson completed 23 of 27 passes for 250 yards with a season-high three touchdowns and the 14th-ranked Cowboys (6-1, 3-0 Big 12) stretched their winning streak to five games - the last four without their top runner and top receiver from a year ago.
"Zac's a very smart, disciplined and structured player. ... He's done a good job over his career blocking out circumstances, just preparing and going out and playing," coach Mike Gundy said. "He's getting comfortable with the players that are competing in the game."
Robinson's 85-percent completion percentage was the best-ever for an Oklahoma State quarterback with at least 20 attempts, breaking the record Gundy set by hitting 27 of 35 passes (77 percent) against Kansas in 1989.
"I hopes he breaks them all," said Gundy, who still holds several school passing records.
Keith Toston ran for 109 yards and a 1-yard TD on his 15 carries, and Beau Johnson added 93 yards on 22 carries.
Nine different players caught passes, including tight ends Wilson Youman and Cooper Bassett each with their first career TDs.
"The chemistry has been building up game by game and practice by practice," said Hubert Anyiam, who had nine catches for 83 yards a week after having 10 for 119.
"I'm feeling great with the guys we've got," Robinson said. "It's a lot of fun for me to be able to just read the field and pick a guy who's open."
Oklahoma State, which plays No. 3 Texas at home next weekend, led 10-0 after its first two possessions. It was 24-0 on Robinson's 19-yard TD to Bassett that capped an 87-yard drive to open the second half.
Baylor (3-4, 0-3), which has a 20-game losing streak to ranked teams, has scored only 24 points in its Big 12 games. The Bears are 1-3 since standout sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin tore a ligament in his right knee a month ago.
"Rhythm, confidence and momentum have to be created and it is hard to create it when your not making productive yards every snap," coach Art Briles said.
David Gettis' 17-yard touchdown catch with 7:17 left kept Oklahoma State from getting its first shutout in a Big 12 game since 2001.
Hunter, who has been out with a nagging ankle-foot injury, took part in pregame warmups but stayed on the sideline without a helmet once the game started, his fifth in row without playing. While medically cleared, Gundy said Hunter isn't ready to play.
Bryant missed his fourth game since it was discovered he lied to the NCAA about an offseason meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders. Bryant has asked the NCAA to reinstate him.
The Cowboys led 10-0 after a 22-yard TD catch by Youman, who grabbed the ball with both hands and bobbled it briefly before pulling it in and holding on when he was popped by safety Jordan Lake. Anyiam had two first-down grabs that drive.
On Dameron Fooks' 16-yard TD catch for a 17-0 halftime lead, he leaped to make the catch between two defenders and held on despite being propelled into a mid-air spin before hitting the ground.
Baylor, wearing all-gold uniforms for homecoming, got a 44-yard kickoff return from Terrance Williams after Dan Bailey's 24-yard field goal on Oklahoma State's first drive. But freshman Nick Florence, who finished 20-of-34 for 230 yards, threw an interception on the next play.
Things don't get any easier for the Bears, whose next three games are against Nebraska, Missouri and Texas - a trio they are a combined 1-26 against in Big 12 play.
"It's not like woe is me, it's go is me," Briles said. "We still have a lot of growing to do as a team."
