South Dakota tops Cal Poly 50-48 in shootout

Nov 15, 2009 - 6:16 AM SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.(AP) -- Noah Shepard threw for 413 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for two more scores as South Dakota beat Cal Poly 50-48 Saturday night.

Shepard's final TD, a 9-yard pass to Tom Flanagan with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter, put the Coyotes (5-5, 2-2 Great West) ahead 50-28.

The Mustangs (4-6, 1-3) came roaring back with touchdown passes of 13, 42 and 42 yards from Tony Smith to Dominique Johnson, the last one on a tipped ball with 20 seconds to go. Cal Poly then attempted a two-point conversion to tie the game, but Smith's pass was batted down by Cory Kuehl.

Shepard's TD passes were to five different receivers. Dan Skelly led that group with five catches for 123 yards.

Smith finished 24 of 38 for 407 yards and six touchdown passes, tying a school record, and Johnson caught 13 passes for 273 yards and a school record five TDs.
