James, Miami edge Houston

Oct 1, 2006 - 2:52 AM MIAMI, Florida (Ticker) -- Kyle Wright and Miami did just enough to knock Houston from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Wright threw a pair of interceptions but tossed the go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter as the Hurricanes edged the Cougars, 14-13, in a non-conference matchup.

The star of the game for Miami was Javarris James, who rushed for 148 yards on 18 carries in his first start. His production bested by one yard the team record for a true freshman held by Clinton Portis.

Houston (4-1) held a 13-7 lead and was driving for another score when Jackie Battle lost a fumble after he was hit by Lovon Ponder. Chavez Grant recovered for Miami, which marched 84 yards in eight plays, taking the lead on a two-yard pass from Wright to James Bryant with 1:24 to go in the third period.

Wright completed 16-of-27 passes for 190 yards for Miami (2-2), which held Houston to 80 yards on 25 carries. It was the fourth straight game in which the Hurricanes held their opponent to fewer than 100 yards on the ground.

Kevin Kolb went 18-of-28 for 196 yards and was sacked four times for the Cougars.
