Johnson leads Georgia Tech into matchup with Maryland

Oct 3, 2006 - 6:54 PM Maryland (3-1) at No. 18 Georgia Tech (4-1) 3:30 pm EDT

ATLANTA (Ticker) - The trap is set for Georgia Tech.

The 18th-ranked Yellow Jackets need to avoid falling into a classic "trap game" Saturday when they hook up with Maryland in an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown.

Georgia Tech (4-1, 2-0 ACC Coastal) is coming off an impressive 38-27 triumph at then-No. 10 Virginia Tech last week. After this game, the Yellow Jackets travel to 15th-ranked Clemson, making Saturday's contest potentially very dangerous for coach Chan Gailey's squad.

The star in Georgia Tech's latest victory was junior sensation Calvin Johnson, who caught six passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. The Yellow Jacket defense also rose to occasion, allowing just 42 rushing yards and collecting four sacks and a touchdown of its own.

Johnson has 11 catches for 280 yards and four touchdowns in the last two games. He has nine career 100-yard games, one shy of the school record held by Kelly Campbell and Harvey Middleton.

Meanwhile, Maryland (3-1, 0-0 Atlantic) allowed a total of 34 points in its three victories but was blasted by national power West Virginia, 45-24, in its lone loss on September 14.

The Terrapins are coming off a 14-10 triumph against Florida International on September 23 in which Sam Hollenbach threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes and Christian Varner intercepted Josh Padrick's pass at the 2-yard line as time expired.

Georgia Tech leads the all-time series, 12-5, including wins in six of the last eight meetings.
