Connecticut easily handles Texas Southern 62-3
Sep 11, 2010 - 7:36 PM By PAT EATON-ROBB Associated Press WriterEAST HARTFORD, Conn.(AP) -- Jordan Todman ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns as Connecticut bounced back from a season-opening loss at Michigan by blowing out Texas Southern 62-3 on Saturday.
Todman scored on two 1-yard runs and had 9-yard touchdown that helped UConn (1-1) to a 45-0 halftime lead over the Tigers (0-2), a Football Championship Subdivision team.
It was the seventh 100-yard game for Todman, a junior tailback who didn't play after intermission. Backup Robby Frey ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
UConn scored the first five times it had the ball, and held the Tigers (0-2) to just a single first down in the first half.
Quarterback Zach Frazer, who also played just two quarters, completed 6 of 9 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Texas Southern's only score came on a 37-yard fourth-quarter field goal from Robert Hersh that made it 55-3.
Todman set up a field goal on UConn's opening drive with a 29-yard run, and had a 53-yard burst up the middle a few minutes later.
That led to a 10-yard touchdown pass from Frazer to wideout Michael Smith, his first TD as a Husky.
A 46-yard pass from Frazer to tight end John Delahunt set up Todman's first touchdown, and Frazer hooked up with Kashif Moore on a 16-yard touchdown that made it 24-0 Huskies after the first quarter.
UConn led 38-0 after Todman's 9-yard touchdown, and Frey's first touchdown with just 24 seconds left in the half made it 45-0.
Connecticut started its second team offense in second half, but that didn't slow the Huskies down. On their first offensive play, Frey took a handoff and ran through the right side of the line for a 63-yard touchdown.
UConn ran up 444 yards of offense, while holding Texas Southern to 169. The Tigers had just 57 yards in the first half and were held without a first down until midway through the second quarter, when they were already down 31-0.
Quarterback Arvell Nelson completed 15 of 27 passes for 135 yards, but was intercepted twice.
The Tigers didn't help themselves, committing 11 penalties that cost them 77 yards.
Texas Southern was a late addition to the UConn schedule after Northeastern announced last November that it was dropping its football program.
