Barth boots winning field goal as Tar Heels down Seminoles

Nov 7, 2010 - 12:55 AM Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Casey Barth connected on a 22-yard field goal with under a minute to play as North Carolina took a 37-35 win over 24th- ranked Florida State in an ACC battle at Doak Campbell Stadium.

After Florida State took a one-point lead with under six minutes to play, North Carolina went on a 12-play drive that covered 72 yards and was set up by a 31-yard T.J. Yates pass to Dwight Jones and a pair of runs by Hunter Furr that went for 12 and 11 yards. Four plays after the final Jones run, Barth was true from 22 yards out with 55 seconds left.

Following the Barth field goal, Florida State got itself into scoring position, but Dustin Hopkins missed a 40-yard field goal wide right with just seconds left on the clock.

The duo of Yates and Jones had a huge game as they found each other eight times for 233 yards and a score. Yates ended the game 24-for-35 passing for 439 yards with three touchdowns for the Tar Heels (6-3, 3-2 ACC), who have taken their past two games after a 33-10 loss to Miami-Florida on October 23.

Chris Ponder was 24-for-34 with 264 yards and three scores for the Seminoles (6-3, 4-2), who have dropped their past two games. Willie Haulstead totaled 10 catches for 154 yards and one score.

Florida State took the lead late in the game after a North Carolina botched long snap sailed over punter C.J. Feagles' head. He then went to kick the ball out of the end zone. The illegal ground kick resulted in a penalty, which set up the Seminoles on North Carolina's one-yard line with less than six minutes left in the game.

On the next play, Lonnie Pryor bulldozed his way into the end zone to give Florida State a 35-34 lead with 5:49 to play.

Trailing by seven, the Tar Heels cut into their deficit on their first touch of the second half when Barth drilled a 46-yard field goal making it a 28-24 game with just over 10 minutes to play.

After holding Florida State on its ensuing touch, North Carolina went ahead. Pinned deep in its own territory, Yates hit Ryan Taylor for 27 yards and that was followed by a 56-yard catch from Jones to setup a 1st-and-goal at the nine-yard line. Three plays later, Yates rolled to his right and hit Joshua Adams on a four-yard score for a 31-28 lead with 5:05 to play in the third.

Barth's second field goal of the game, a 31-yarder with 11:41 to play, gave North Carolina a 34-28 lead.

North Carolina scored on the opening drive of the game when Johnny White scored from six yards out, but Florida State answered back when Ponder connected with Haulstead for a five-yard touchdown pass later in the first.

North Carolina regained the lead when Jones caught a 67-yard pass from Yates, but the Seminoles knotted the game up again at 14 when Ponder found Rodney Smith for a 27-yard score early in the second. The drive was set up by facemask penalty during a punt return which put Florida State at midfield.

Florida State took its first lead with 10:13 left in the half when Ponder passed to Taiwan Easterling for a seven-yard touchdown, making it a 21-14 game.

The two teams continued to go tit-for-tat when North Carolina received another touchdown pass from Yates when he found Anthony Elzy for a 14-yard score to tie the game once more.

Florida State took the lead into halftime, 28-21, when Pryor had a five-yard scoring run with 3:47 left.
